Store Visit Summary:

This particular Target store was aregular Target, meaning it was not a Super Target or a flexible format Target. As you can see above in the store layout, right as you walked in on the left side of the store, the kids clothing section was immediately in front of the shopper. The kids' home decorations were on the opposite side of the store, near the back right corner. The overall feeling of the store was positive and friendly. We also noticed that many moms were at Target shopping by themselves. This is good to know because if moms are shopping by themselves, then their kids are not there to share opinions and voice what kind of items they want their parents to purchase for them.

Unrelated to the kids’ products that our group is focusing on, we also noticed that this target had a relatively smaller grocery section than other Targets we have been to. This insight could be important because moms may only shop at Targets that offer more variety of products, such as food, which can limit how we can reach consumers of the kids’ section. While walking through the various aisles of the store, we also noticed that all items seemed to be in stock and nothing was running low on inventory. This shows how Target is very efficient in their logistics and supply strategies and how it will not negatively affect the customer when making purchasing decisions.

While observing shoppers, we noticed that many moms were on the phone either on a phone call, searching the Internet, or texting. While we are unsure of their purpose of it being social or related to their shopping experience, this is good to know so that we can more effectively use different platforms of technology in our creative marketing strategies to help improve their overall Target shopping experience. We also realized that many people shopping in the kids’ clothing section would spend a lot of time looking at all the different options and choosing the one they thought was best. In other words, it was not a low involvement consumer process and the parent wanted to make sure that their kid would genuinely enjoy the product they chose.

Although it is not surprising, it is important to mention that both the kids’ clothing as well as the kids’ home decoration products were a variety of bright colors. Knowing that kids enjoy these color schemes, it might be beneficial to look more into the different types of emotions and psychological thought processes that are connected to these color arrangements and how they can affect purchasing decisions for parents and their kids.

Target also joins with other companies in many different departments to promote exclusive lines. While at Target, we noticed that Cat & Jack is one partnership that is very prominent in the kids' clothing section. We also noticed a lot of sponsorship from characters that are relevant to children's personal lives in the clothing section. Characters such as Captain America, Elsa from Disney's Frozen, and Darth Vader were featured that can resonate with kids and affect the purchasing decisions of parents when their children express interest.

We also noticed that with respect to the kids' home decorations, there is a very large variety of creative products for rooms that you would not typically expect. This is a strength of Target, since they offer differing products from other competitors that connect with different personality types and consumer needs. These unusual products give consumers another reason to shop at Target, knowing that they might find something completely unique that they weren't originally looking for in something like a home design.

Lawmakers spent more than four hours hearing testimony from lenders and welfare advocates on two bills that would significantly tighten up Nevada's laws on high-interest lending.

Lawmakers on the Assembly Commerce and Labor committee sat through roughly five hours of presentations and at times heated testimony over two bills seekings to put in place more stringent regulations on high-interest, short-term loans -- commonly referred to as payday lending. While welfare advocates and progressive groups heralded the bills as a much-needed change that would close existing loopholes and prevent overuse of loans, industry lobbyists said that some of the proposals, including a 36 percent interest rate cap on all loans, would essentially cripple the industry and force businesses to leave Nevada.

The two bills heard today -- AB222 and AB163 -- were previously detailed in a Nevada Independent article linked below, which delves into the different types of high-interest loans and some of legislative history behind the current law.

Is college really worth it to achieve a middle-class lifestyle when graduates have to pay a tremendous amount of debt?

The best advice I can give your children is that choosing the right major is really important. Nowadays, employers are looking to hire someone who is the best fit for the position, so they should choose a major that is valuable and their passionate about instead of what can make them financially stable. After I spent three years in college, I realized how much that could impact me time and money wise. I’ve changed majors three times.

Since it is a risky investment, it wouldn't be a good idea for your children to go straight into a university. The reality is it may not pay off, but your children have the ability to get experience. By doing so, there is a better chance that it might lead them into a fulfilling career path.

An alternative route that I don’t recommend is to take out loans because it can be detrimental for high school graduates. Graduates will end up owing about $100,000 without interest added on for the lifetime of the loan. Many will wind up paying twice that amount overtime due to the high interest rates.

I still believe that knowledge and learning gained through education is priceless, and nothing should stop young adults from aiming for success. But, working and saving and then going tocollege is the best route because it’s cost effective and gives them time to decide the next step. It will give them peace of mind and certainty as well.
