SPRINGBOKS SURPRISE AT CAPTAIN:
South Africa coach Heyneke Meyer sprang a surprise in naming scrum-half Fourie du Preez as captain on Wednesday for their key World Cup game against Scotland on Saturday.
Du Preez, 33, takes the role vacated by centre Jean de Villiers, who retired from international rugby after suffering a second broken jaw in six weeks against Samoa last Saturday.
Du Preez, who becomes the 56th Springbok captain, got Meyer's vote as the squad vice-captain veteran lock Victor Matfield misses the Pool B game in Newcastle because of a hamstring strain.
Du Preez beat the likes of Schalk Burger, Duane Vermeulen and Francois Louw to the post when Matfield was ruled out.
All have captained their domestic teams back home. Du Preez only captained a Super Rugby team back in 2008.
"Fourie has been one of the best scrum-halves in world rugby for a long time, but he also understands the game better than most players and is a tactical genius," said Meyer.
"He will know exactly what is needed on Saturday when we continue our fight to keep our World Cup dream alive."

NAHOLO BACK AFTER BROKEN LEG:
Ten weeks after breaking his right leg, New Zealand winger Waisake Naholo will make his second Test appearance against Georgia at the Rugby World Cup on Friday.
Seeking a third straight win in Pool C, the All Blacks selected on Wednesday a full-strength team that included recalls for Richie McCaw as captain and flyhalf Dan Carter.
Naholo's return is the headline, though. He sustained a hairline fracture to his fibula on debut for New Zealand on July 17 against Argentina in the Rugby Championship. Treatment for the fracture has included a trip to Fiji for traditional healing from his uncle, including putting leaves on the leg.
The All Blacks rate him so highly that they selected Naholo in the squad despite him being injured. (AP)

WARBURTON'S WALES WON'T LET UP:
Sam Warburton's Wales can take a giant step towards securing an automatic World Cup quarter-final qualifying spot when they face Fiji on Thursday.
The Welsh skipper said that after their dramatic win over England, the team are determined not to talk themselves out of another victory.
The Welsh are second in the "Pool of Death" on points difference from Australia, the two sides having both notched up two victories in two matches.
England sit third having lost 28-25 to Wales and play the Wallabies at Twickenham on Saturday in a must-win match.
Warburton said the team had been buoyed by their outstanding win over England even though it came at an injury cost, Hallam Amos and Scott Williams ruled out and Liam Williams undergoing concussion protocols.
"The players are talking to each other and we definitely can't let this slip now against Fiji," Warburton said.
"I know the players aren't going to be in the wrong mindset going into the Fiji game because it would be so easy to slip up against Fiji, who I guarantee won't be 66-0 like it was four years ago.
"We know we're going to have to be at our best to get a good result, so there's going to be no complacency whatsoever."
Indeed, that rogue result in New Zealand four years ago aside, it was Fiji who produced one of the performances of the 2007 World Cup in France when they beat Wales 38-34 to send the Welsh home early.
"The performance against England sort of proved to ourselves we can compete and we've got a fantastic chance of doing well and we've always believed that but it's one thing believing it and another thing seeing it," Warburton said.
"Being able to go to England and win at Twickenham was a massive confidence booster for the whole squad."
Wales coach Warren Gatland said he wanted his players to build a run of victories.
"The longer we are together the better we get and when we've won Grand Slams and stuff and big performances the momentum carries us through and that's what I'm counting on for Thursday," Gatland said.
Fiji – who have lost Nemani Nadolo to a ban but welcome back Dominiko Waqaniburotu from his week on the sidelines – now have little left but an upset to hope for in the tournament's toughest pool.
In an arduous opening to the tournament, Fiji played and lost to England and Australia in just five days.
"It is tough," said assistant coach Tabai Matson who played for Fiji in the 1999 World Cup and later played 10 games for the All Blacks.
"But in saying that we are still enjoying ourselves and we have got a great opportunity in front of us. The mountain just got steeper. Now we are relying on other teams to fall over."
Fiji have lost two players – prop Isei Colati and wing Waisea Nayacalevu – through injury, but Matson said they have taken heart from the way Wales overcame a horror run of injuries to overpower England.
"It was a great Welsh team performance and we have to understand that 80 minutes of rugby is going to be the minimum amount of effort for us," he said.
A lack of discipline has marked Fiji's opening matches. They have conceded 24 penalties, three yellow cards and had two players cited. With Wales fly-half Dan Biggar in fine kicking form, booting 23 points in the England win, Matson said issues of ill-discipline had been addressed.
"Even for us now, our discipline has let us down and that, against the big teams, can lead to three, six or nine points, when you are a man down. Then you are chasing the game. So, it is a critical part of our success." (AFP)

TONGA PREVAIL IN THRILLER Tonga ran in five tries to edge out Namibia 35-21 in a breathless and highly-entertaining Rugby World Cup Pool C match at Sandy Park on Tuesday.
Namibia had been confident of notching up their first ever World Cup win at the 17th attempt but they were overpowered by Tonga, who lost 17-10 to Georgia in their opening game.
Winger Telusa Veainu and flanker Jack Ram scored tries to give Tonga an early lead, but Namibia fullback Johan Tromp cut the deficit before flyhalf Latiume Fosita crossed the line to put his side 22-7 ahead at halftime.
Man-of-the-match Ram added his second try but Namibia refused to lie down and captain Jacques Burger touched down following a fierce rolling maul.

SERFONTEIN ADJUSTS TO CURVEBALL
Jan Serfontein said Tuesday he was shocked to get the call to replace South African captain Jean de Villiers at the World Cup.
Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer put the 22-year-old Blue Bulls centre on alert Saturday after de Villiers broke his jaw for the second time in little more than a month and decided to quit international rugby.
"I was surprised to get the call," said Serfontein who could still start a key Pool B match against Scotland on Saturday.
"I was watching the Wales-England game and I got a call from coach Heyneke saying that Jean is injured and he was considering picking me and he would only confirm it on Sunday.
"I struggled to sleep on Saturday night and got the news on Sunday, but I'm happy to be here now and will do everything I can to contribute. But its not ideal circumstances with Jean injured."
Serfontein played in all of South Africa's 12 tests in 2014 -- forming an effective partnership with de Villiers -- and some say he was unlucky not to be called into the World Cup squad where Meyer preferred Damian de Allende and Jesse Kriel.
"It was a difficult season, I had a couple of injuries, which didn't help, at vital times in the season and Jesse (Kriel) did very well and got his chance.
"I can't complain or anything but the life gives you a few curveballs, and you have to adapt," he said.
De Allende is suffering from a knock to the knee suffered in the 46-6 win over Samoa on Saturday.

TIME FOR ENGLAND TO GO FOR BROKE:
"Schoolboys and "amateurs" were just some of the damning words hurled at England after they lost to Wales at the World Cup and now they are being urged to be creative and decisive in their must-win match against Australia.
If they lose to the Wallabies on Saturday, England – beaten 28-25 by Wales in a Twickenham thriller last weekend – will be close to becoming the first World Cup hosts to exit before the knockout phase.
Critics slammed them for failing to finish off the game. England three times led Wales by 10 points.
Against Australia they must use their "creative talent" and be "streetwise", former internationals said.
England captain Chris Robshaw came under fire for declining a late penalty kick that could have led to a draw. Instead he opted for an attacking line-out where hopes of a match-clinching try were snuffed out by the Welsh defence.
Ex-England captain Will Carling said responsibility for the debacle lay with England coach Stuart Lancaster, a former school-teacher, for creating a "classroom-orientated environment".
"My view is that he has had leaders and that he needed to have trusted them and develop them ... instead, we've treated them as schoolboys," Carling said.
Clive Woodward, who coined the phrase "T-CUP" – thinking clearly under pressure – while coaching England to World Cup glory in 2003, slammed the side's final-quarter display against Wales.
"It pains me to say it but England looked like a team of amateurs playing against streetwise professionals in the last 20 minutes," former England centre Woodward wrote in a Daily Mail column.
Woodward said Lancaster succeeded with his two most controversial selections against Wales – bringing in Owen Farrell at fly-half and starting Sam Burgess in midfield.
But they were undermined when rugby league convert Burgess came off with 11 minutes left, when not injured, so George Ford could enter at stand-off, with Farrell moved into the centres, he added.
"From looking secure most of the night, England were suddenly lost and Wales' decisive try was down to that," said Woodward.
Looking to the Australia match, he added: "England collectively have to produce the performance of their careers.
"With the stakes so high, England must fire all their bullets. If (Jonathan) Joseph is not fit, I would bring Henry Slade straight in at 13.
"England need every creative talent they have on the field."
Jason Robinson, a member of Woodward's World Cup-winning side, lamented that the team had not been "streetwise enough" to be further ahead when on top against Wales.
And he said better core skills were needed to beat Australia.
"Whatever tactics we choose, getting the basics right; defence and discipline are going to be absolutely vital," the dual-code star insisted.
It may be true that giving a coach a second chance at a World Cup is no bad thing.
Woodward famously said "judge me on the World Cup" ahead of the 1999 tournament only for England to be out-thought in a quarter-final defeat in Paris where South Africa's Jannie de Beer kicked a record five drop-goals in a Test.
Four years later, Woodward was a World Cup-winner.
Similarly, in 2007 New Zealand were undone by France in the last eight only for the All Blacks hierarchy to keep faith with coach Graham Henry, who oversaw a 2011 World Cup triumph on home soil.
Lancaster was, controversially, given a six-year contract extension 12 months ago by the Rugby Football Union in a deal that takes him beyond the 2019 World Cup in Japan.
If England do go out in the first round, the RFU will be under huge pressure to cut him loose. But that would say as much about chief executive Ian Ritchie, the man who appointed him, as it would Lancaster. (AFP)
