Brandon Buttry's cheeseburger salute brings smiles in sorrow

Friday was going to be a tough day for Brandon Buttry's family. It was the day they were supposed to greet him on his return to Fort Lewis, Wash. But he died Nov. 5 in Afghanistan. Still the family found a way to smile on this difficult day.

Storified by Steve Buttry · Sat, Nov 24 2012 10:57:59

My family has had an emotionally exhausting month since my nephew, Pfc Brandon Buttry died in a watch tower in Afghanistan. The Army doesn't want troop movements mentioned publicly, so we refrained from disclosing an agonizing detail of the death: Brandon was killed 10 days before he was supposed to leave Afghanistan. His funeral in Shenandoah, Iowa, was on the day he was supposed to head home. His parents, Don and Pam, were making plans to travel to Fort Lewis for his return home, scheduled for the day after Thanksgiving.
When I talked with Don on the phone Thanksgiving Day, I could tell that Friday was going to be a tough day for the family. They were planning to drive to Pella, Iowa, to spend the day with their adult daughter, Mandy, and her family. By the time they got to Pella, they had a great idea. They emailed family and friends, telling them Brandon had said he wanted to celebrate his return to Fort Lewis with a cheeseburger, an order of fries and a large Coke. They asked us to enjoy a cheeseburger, fries and a large Coke in his honor. Their daughter Missy Rock and I shared the request on Facebook and things kind of took off.
Let's continue the burger salute through the weekend. Tag or message me on Facebook if you post a photo there. Or mention me (@stevebuttry) in a tweet. I'll update with the photos posted Saturday and Sunday.

My brother, Don, and his wife, Pam, had been planning to go to Fort Lewis, Wash., today to meet Brandon on his return from Afghanistan. He was killed 10 days before his scheduled departure. He told his parents he wanted to get a cheeseburger, fries and a large Coke on his return. Don and Pam are encouraging his family and friends to remember Brandon today with a cheeseburger, fries and a large Coke (the Thanksgiving leftovers can wait till Saturday). Mimi and I will be going to Five Guys this evening (yes, quite a sacrifice) and posting a photo of our meal. If you're joining us in the cheeseburger tribute, please post a photo and we'll share them with Don and Pam (who aren't on FB).

Of course, lots of Buttry family members toasted Brandon with burgers:

No one in the extended family understands what Brandon's family is going through as well as the Devlins, who lost their son and brother Patrick (the same age as Brandon and probably each other's closest cousin) in 2009. Kat Devlin and her parents, Carol and John, posted four photos from their cheeseburger salute, apparently spilling their Coke and winning points for the best use of ketchup.

This is about a months worth of coverage in the lead up to the presidential elections on November 6th.

The 57th presidential elections are to be held on 6th November 2012. The two people that are running are Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. If Obama is to win he will be re-elected for his second term in the White House while it would be Mitt Romney's first term if elected.
The first of the presidential debates were held in the beginning of October, the video below shows both sides of the debate. It was mediated by Jim Lehrer.
First Presidential Debate: Obama vs. Romney (Complete HD - Quality Audio) · thedailyconversation

In this debate Obama and Romney both agree that the corporate tax rate is to high, and need to lower it, they also agree that the United States needs to become energy efficient on their own and through doing this it will hopefully create a lot more jobs for Americans. Tax cuts were the first debate, both agree that America is doing best when the middle class is better off as most people are in the brackets of middle class America. Small businesses and start up business, along with businesses that are looking to invest in America will receive help also as these businesses can look at hiring more people when they are not paying so many taxes. Social security and Medicare were both big topics as well. Both say tweaks need to be worked with but majoratively not a lot needs to be changed to the plan. A few other different options were mentioned such as vouchers for medicines, but both candidates did not really see any use for this system. Medicare is a hard topic to follow though because so many different things can happen with it. With England having a National Health System it means we don't have to pay insurance, in America you HAVE to pay insurance to get proper health care which whether it is private or the national you can quite easily have problems with it.

Banks were another hot topic. Both competitors blame the banks and say regulations need to be kept in place to control reckless behavior by both people on Wall Street and loan officers at banks. Dodd-Frank was regulations that Romney says were with good intentions, but just not set out properly and given set guidelines. These guidelines need to be set out so that banks know what their regulations actually are.

Overall a lot of people don't actually know what Romney stands for, in the beginning a lot of people saw that he wanted to cut higher income tax and he endorsed a lot of things for 18 months that he started retracting in this debate. He also stated a lot of things saying, "I would replace this" but he would never state with what he would replace these policies, laws, or organisations with which doesn't sit well with a lot of people.

A lot of comments were made about this debate, mainly about the man moderating it Jim Lehrer saying that he did not do well with it, nor keep to time limits. He should have been heard rarely and seen less.
The second presidential debate mediated by Candy Crowley.
Complete Second Presidential Town Hall Debate 2012: Barack Obama vs. Mitt Romney - Oct 16, 2012 · thenewyorktimes

This debate was all from the audience that were in studio and watching the debate and the questions started off about jobs. This is the main factor in America is that over 40% of the people that are unemployed have been out of work over 6 months. Romney states that he has a plan to create 12 million new jobs, but does not talk about his "5 point plan" in detail. Since Obama took office he said that he has create tens of thousands of jobs in the private sector. Like the first debate the taxes were a large topic for debate, tax cuts from all levels of pay would be a very bad thing for the economy and you wonder where all the money to make up for all the lost revenue would come in the deficit. Again in this debate Romney engrains it in people that he will NOT cut the 60% tax that the top 5% of people who are in the higher class pay, which again contradicts a lot of what many people believe. Jobs were the other large debate, along with cuts for vital services, equality, immigration systems, terrorism, and weapons being held by civilians.
Romney largely attacks what Obama has done in his last 4 years, when he has actually done so much. Without knowing Romney's plans it again does not give a lot of people hope for what he says.

Overall a lot of what was debated was just regurgitated information that was said in the first debate. There was not a lot of new information that was stated.

The third debate was all about Foreign policy and mediated by Bob Schieffer on October 22nd.
Complete Third Presidential Debate on Foreign Policy 2012: Barack Obama vs. Mitt Romney Oct 22, 2012 · thenewyorktimes

This last debate had all of the questions written by and posed by Bob Schieffer himself. The first question started off talking about Libya and the 4 American's that were killed over there. Through talking about this it also lead in to talking about terrorism and how to stop extremists in the Middle-Eastern countries to become peaceful and not only make those countries safe, but for America as well. With this it was asked how much will the United States get involved with this and Romney said that he would not get involved as he does not want to risk American lives, whilst Obama says that he wants to help the people to build a good government and give them advice on how to be a great democratic set of countries.

Obama brought up great points in this round that Romney has been changing his stances a lot, hence why a lot of people don't know what he is actually going to do as president.

The economy was the large second debate. Romney says he can create jobs and get the economy on track with his "5 simple steps" which he actually explained in this debate. Obama focuses on education reforms to get schools back on track and to now hire more teachers and train people to help students to become "the best trained work force" which would apparently help new businesses want to locate to America or get these young people to become new entrepreneurs.

Romney also states that he would get rid of some of the programs such as "Obamacare" because it apparently costs way to much money, and get the individual states to run Medicare because they know better than the federal government what people need. He also states though that he could have the economy "back on track" but that it will take 8 to 10 years, this would mean that he would need to be elected president for this term and in 2016 to get all of his plans into action properly and possibly even have the next president continue on in his own plans. Whether this is viable to a lot of people is uncertain. Obama goes on to state that Romney's plans and the maths of his plans "simply do not add up" because he wants to cut taxes, give the military another 2 trillion dollars (which they are not asking for) and he says he can take care of the deficit as well just by cutting a few things and closing loopholes.

After all was said, although a few new topics were brought up again it seems that a lot of the same subjects were being talked about and a lot of the same information that was said in the other two debates. Even the way that the two candidates say their information is the same words they keep using over and over again.

What people have to say.

A lot of people have high opinions about a lot of the policies mainly the fact that Romney does not support gay marriage. In published reports it says that over 90% of Gay, Lesbian, Bi, and transgender people that vote will vote for Obama with a very small percentage saying that they would probably vote for Romney.
Lmfao #Obama #Obama2012 #Romney http://pic.twitter.com/dDHIXox3 · Yusef
So many more people have a lot of negative things to say about Romney, if you search him through twitter a lot of people say that he is not fit to be the president and a lot of people would be very angry if he were to win.

This is screen shot from Tumblr that shows how much people are supporting Obama over Romney.

Justin Bieber: outfit befitting a Queen?

When pop star Justin Bieber received a Queen's Diamond Jubilee medal from Prime Minister Stephen Harper, he didn't exactly endear himself to Canadians.

Justin Bieber received a Diamond Jubilee Medal today from the Canadian Prime Minister. This is real life. http://pic.twitter.com/xmzxi8vx · Andrew Kaczynski
The Diamond Jubilee Medal goes to Canadians who have contributed significantly to Canada. Has Bieber contributed anything to Canada? Not sure about that one, but considering he has almost 31 million followers, and there's only 35 million Canadians, there's probably an argument to be made on his behalf.

ORE 19.30.

PUPPATO: «Le primarie sono state troppo brevi.

BZ Vettel

Hundreds of stories out there to see how people get addicted to playing games....

Storified by ShivaLaxmi Arumugham · Sun, Nov 25 2012 11:20:27

Virtual games including video games (computer games, console games, arcade machine games, cell phone, PDA, etc) and online games (using internet, browser games, etc) are found to be addictive while the game idea, and technology develop.
Started mainly as an entertainment, game has also lead to gambling, source of income, and also a way to escape from doing something that is not desired.
Several non-academic resources and academic research studies shows that people get addicted to playing games. Although getting addicted can be defined in various ways depending on once routine and experience, there is no solid evidence on whether virtual games are the main reason for addiction.
According to an article, When Escape Seems Just a Mouse-Click Away in Washington Post, 20 year old Kim in South Korea, admits about his addition saying that he had stopped changing his clothes, going out and had began to see himself as the game characters. South Korea is considered as the epicenter of video games has lot of stories that deal with young people addicted to playing video games. Mainly, they consider electronic games as an escape from education. Students in S.Korea have to go for 4-5 hours of daily school education. If this is the case of game addiction we are talking about, then where is the responsibility of parents to pull them to tasks that are more interesting. Clearly, from the parents side, there is a lack of understanding of kids who play as a game to escape.
Games are interesting that demands competition, high scores, hard work to try again and again, more time, etc and at the same time they offer ranks, awards (such as ribbons, titles, prizes, certificates, coins) to motivate us to go further. There are games where one has to save their lives by fighting enemies who pulls the user more.

Apart from the games itself possessing the addictive features, there are certainly other reasons for addiction such as individual willingness, amount of time, and other undesirable social constraints. As there are on-going researches without a strong conclusion, only games can not be a reason for addiction.
