Australians For Honest Politics Slush Fund

Storified by Ross Bowler · Tue, Dec 11 2012 00:42:42

Saturday 1 December 2012
According to the report of  Phillip Coorey, Sydney Morning Herald Chief Political Correspondent, published Saturday 1 December 2012,
"On Friday 30 November 2012 Mr Tony Abbott said: ''We need a full judicial inquiry to get to the bottom of this; if the Prime Minister has nothing to hide, she won't be scared of an inquiry.''

He stopped short of saying Ms Gillard had broken the law.

''The point I make is that the Prime Minister has provided false information to the West Australian Corporate Affairs Commission, and it is unlawful to provide false information to the West Australian CAC.'' "

This article contends Tony Abbott set up an Australians For Honest Politics Slush Fund and asks the question:
Did Tony Abbott lie to the Australian Electoral Commission about that Australians For Honest Politics Slush Fund?
Full Judicial Inquiry
If Tony Abbott contends that “it is unlawful to provide false information to the West Australian CAC'', then Tony Abbott must agree that it is unlawful to provide false information to the Australian Electoral Commission.

Tony Abbott opines ''We need a full judicial inquiry to get to the bottom of this” and paraphrasing him, if Mister Abbott has nothing to hide, he won't be scared of an inquiry.
Wednesday 22 August 2012
On Wednesday 22 August 2012 Tony Abbott was interviewed on the ABC 7.30 program by reporter Leigh Sales. During that interview Tony Abbott said:
Tony Abbott:: "But look, this [the Slater & Gordon questions] isn't the main game for us."

Tony Abbott: “Well, the issue here is not whether she was an unethical lawyer. The issue surely is she is an unethical Prime Minister. And that's the main game for us, Leigh.”

Tony Abbott: “I think the circumstances of her departure from a previous employer are of public interest, but in the end it's not whether she was an unethical lawyer that matters, it's the fact that this is an untrustworthy Prime Minister that counts, and that's the main game for us.”
Thursday 23 August 2012
On Thursday 23 August 2012 Tony Abbott was interviewed on the Today Show by Lisa Wilkinson. During that interview he said:
“Whether or not she was an untrustworthy lawyer is not the issue. I think this Prime Minister is an untrustworthy head of government and my job is to hold the government to account and my job is to provide a credible alternative”
Full Judicial Slush Fund Inquiry
Tony Abbott has continually made an issue of the ethics and trustworthiness of the head of government.

On Wednesday 22 August 2012 when interviewed by Leigh Sales on the ABC 7.30 program Tony Abbott said: "the issue here is not whether she [Prime Minister Gillard] was an unethical lawyer."

On Thursday 23 August 2012 when interviewed by Lisa Wilkinson on the Today Show Tony Abbott said: “Whether or not she [Prime Minister Gillard] was an untrustworthy lawyer is not the issue."

The Smear Campaign Tony Abbott has been pursuing against Prime Minister Gillard relates to her time as a lawyer, not to her time as a Member of Parliament.

The allegations against Mr Abbott relate to his time as a Member of Parliament. They are, in part, that he provided false information to an Electoral Commission, something he acknowledges is improper and may even be unlawful.

It is hypocritical in the extreme for Mr Abbott to contend on the one hand that, because Prime Minister Gillard allegedly provided false information to an Electoral Commission, she should submit to a full judicial inquiry, and on the other hand contend that he should not submit to such an inquiry himself, when he faces essentially the same allegations as he is making against Prime Minister Gillard. It is even more so in respect of Mr Abbott as he admits the behaviour of Prime Minister Gillard as a lawyer is not the issue and the allegations against him relate to his time as a Member of Parliament.

It is now time for him to demonstrate his ethics and trustworthiness and submit to a full Judicial Slush Fund Inquiry, an Inquiry that would examine all aspects of the Australians For Honest Politics Slush Fund.
Saturday 1 December 2012
The stakes seemed to get a little higher for Mr Abbott on Saturday 1 December 2012 as a result of an exchange on Twitter. Michelle Grattan, Political Editor, The Age Newspaper, was asked by
".. If really has criminal allegations which would stand in a court of law why did he not make them during "

In response to that tweet Robert Oakeshott MP, @OakeyMP, Independent Federal MP for Lyne, said: "Any criminality should be referred to police,or equivalent. So Tony, are the LNP assisting police?"

As at Sunday 2 December 2012, no apparent reply had been provided.

Wednesday 5 December 2012
Barbara Ramjan, the woman who accused Tony Abbott of intimidating her by punching a wall on either side of her head following a university election in 1977 is suing Liberal powerbroker Michael Kroger and Nationwide News, publisher of The Australian, for damages.

On Wednesday 5 December 2012 that Defamation action was mentioned in the Supreme Court Sydney.

Wednesday 5 December 2012 and Thursday 6 December 2012
Tony Abbott participated in a stunt driving a truck from Brisbane, Qld to Terrigal, NSW
Thursday 6 December 2012
On Thursday 6 December 2012 Tony Abbott held a media conference for his truck driving stunt.
During that soft media conference Tony Abbott received no questions about either of the following issues:
- Barbara Ramjan v Michael Kroger Defamation action
- The Australians For Honest Politics Slush Fund

The truck driving stunt would have taken some time to organise, nothing about it appeared spontaneous. It beggars belief that such an obvious stunt by Tony Abbott occurred in ignorance of the Barbara Ramjan vs Michael Kroger defamation action being mentioned in Court. Without the media attention on that ludicrous stunt more media resources could have been devoted to the Ramjan defamation action and the extent to which it involved Tony Abbott.

At the same time as questions were being asked of Mr Abbott in respect of the defamation action, questions could have also been asked of him in respect of his involvement with The Australians For Honest Politics Slush Fund.
The Main Game and Putting The Allegations To Bed
On Wednesday 22 August 2012 and Thursday 23 August 2012 Tony Abbott stated clearly that:
• the Slater & Gordon questions
• whether the Prime Minister was an unethical lawyer; and
• whether the Prime Minister was an untrustworthy lawyer
were not the main game

On Friday 14 September 2012 when interviewed by Karl Stefanovic on the Today Show in relation to the Barbara Ramjan wall punch allegations, Tony Abbott said he was putting the allegations to bed by participating in that interview.

The Prime Minister has participated in at least two lengthy media conferences answering questions the subject of the Smear Campaign Tony Abbott is conducting. Tony Abbott refuses to concede the Prime Minister has put the Smear Campaign questions to bed and a week of Question Time in Federal Parliament was devoted to the Smear Campaign against the Prime Minister.

However what is absolutely clear is that Tony Abbott has done nothing to put to bed or even answer the many questions that exist in respect of The Australians For Honest Politics Slush Fund.
Friday 30 November 2012
The hypocrisy of Tony Abbott is breathtaking when you consider that on or about Friday 30 November 2012 Tony Abbott and the Liberal Party of Australia called for the setting up of an Inquiry Into the Australian Workers’ Union Workplace Reform Association Inc and Related Matters and released their proposed Terms of Reference.
