Faculty members are deciding this week whether to authorize a strike at Portland State University. There's never been a faculty strike at any of Oregon's public universities. Union officials predict that the PSU faculty will authorize a strike when they vote on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Professors at Portland State University are holding a strike vote Tuesday and Wednesday. The union and administration have been negotiating terms of a new contract, but the two sides disagree on professor salaries, contract length and the faculty's role in university policy.

Members of Portland State University's faculty union have six hours left to cast a vote on whether to authorize union leaders to call a strike if they can't reach agreement with the PSU administration on a new contract. Both sides say they want to agree on a contract, not have a strike.

Regarding the article "Labor talks reach impasse at PSU" (Feb. 25): As a former instructor in the Portland State University business school, I think that cutting out some of the administrative costs and stopping the subsidies to the football program are not even good starting points for getting the PSU budget in order.
