The Melbourne Cup field is starting to take shape after the trainers of in-doubt runners Green Moon, Glencadam Gold and Winchester all declared their horses would contest Tuesday’s race.

Green Moon had been one of the early favourites for the $6.2 million Cup before producing a disappointing seventh-place finish in last weekend’s Cox Plate.

After Green Moon worked strongly at Moonee Valley on Friday morning, part-owner Nick Williams tweeted: “All being well he will take his place in the Melbourne Cup.”

Williams also confirmed Brett Prebble will return from Hong Kong to take the ride.

News of Green Moon’s gallop and the booking of Prebble has seen the horse shorten into $19 from $26.

Gai Waterhouse, meanwhile, says Glencadam Gold has recovered from a hoof injury and expects the horse to run on Tuesday.

The imported English galloper won his first four Australian starts and was favourite for the Caulfield Cup but faded after leading to finish 15th.

Glencadam Gold has been recuperating with beach work and Waterhouse says the horse is well.

Another horse under a cloud was former American galloper Winchester, who was found to be mildly lame by Racing Victoria (RVL) vets yesterday after he was reshod incorrectly.

Winchester finished ninth in the Caulfield Cup and is entered for the Mackinnon tomorrow and racing manager Troy Corstens said the horse was in good order after a light run this morning.

On Friday afternoon he passed an examination by RVL vets and is clear to race.
