Laughed so much @paulsinha's set @Seven_Arts in Chapel Allerton last night. That guy has an wicked sense of humour (and an excellent neck).
Stayed for a drinks in the @Seven_Arts bar after the show. Ended up having a rather heated debate with an army officer (so Chapel Allerton).
So after having insisted that we join his debate, me, Sam and Carl were quite happy to tell this #ArmyGuy our views on the military.
I think what would him up was when, as a counter-argument, I said I didn't judge people for joining the army as "people need jobs" #ArmyGuy.
I was pretty pleased with that position (accepting individual employment decisions in a capitalist economy while demanding reflexivity)...
...but #ArmyGuy wasn't having any of it. It "wasn't just any job", he informed me, and as a voter and tax-payer he was "representing" me.
...he just did what the Government - and by implication voters and tax-payers - were telling him to do in Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. #ArmyGuy.
Well, as you can imagine, this #ArmyGuy's decision to collapse moral authority and representative democracy certainly intrigued me...
I told him I thought it was a cop-out to claim that he had no reflexive agency, but that he was a (murderous) arm of UK democracy #ArmyGuy.
He disagreed, predictably. (For jurisprudence fans out there, he was a proponent of Joseph Raz's theory of moral authority.) #ArmyGuy.
Our insistence that his actions weren't "representative" of us three in any way he went on an amusing rant about Labour voters...
...and how voting Labour still makes you complicit in UK representative democracy. It took the wind out of his sails when I agreed #ArmyGuy.
I mean what else can you do when someone mounts such a well-constructed - if unintended - critique of representative democracy? #ArmyGuy
It's all about planting seeds of doubt with people like #ArmyGuy. You never know, one could blossom the next time he's facing the 'enemy'...
...well, either that or he'll pull the trigger just to spite me. (I guess these are the risks you run drinking in Chapel Allerton.) #ArmyGuy
