A.M. Best Special Report: The UAE Maintains Insurance Market Hub Status, Despite Economic Slowdown

LONDON - Wednesday, May 8th 2013 [ME NewsWire]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Insurers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are forecasted to see strong continued growth in 2013, despite a projection that the UAE’s economy will expand at a slower pace, according to a new report from A.M. Best Co.

The report, titled “The UAE Maintains Insurance Market Hub Status, Despite Economic Slowdown”, states that the UAE is expected to maintain its position as the predominant insurance market within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region in the short to medium term. A.M. Best notes that economic development in the UAE will continue to assist the insurance market’s expansion, with strong public spending, investment and social programmes expected to continue driving the domestic demand for insurance, particularly in the property, infrastructure, hospitality and tourism sectors. Mahesh Mistry, director, analytics, said: “In recent years, the UAE has benefited materially from oil revenues stimulating economic growth, which in turn has enabled spending on infrastructure. Furthermore, the insurance sector has been buoyed by the introduction of compulsory medical schemes in Abu Dhabi.”

The insurance regulator, the Insurance Authority, has reported a 2012 preliminary estimate for total gross premium written, showing a 10% increase to AED 26.5 billion. In addition to the local market, the UAE hosts The Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), which acts as a finance and business hub and is subject to its own bespoke laws and regulations. Established in 2004, the DIFC has become an important hub for foreign insurers attempting to build a presence in the region.

Similar to other GCC countries, the UAE has a highly fragmented market, with 61 registered insurers. Yvette Essen, director, industry research - Europe and emerging markets, and report author, added: “In the direct market, insurers face increasing competition and rate reductions, which may place pressure on performance. Younger companies are feeling pricing pressures from both Takaful and general insurance providers, which make it difficult to achieve ambitious targets for premium volume.”

Les 10 commandements du parfait (?) reportage télé

Reportage réalisé avec Aurélie Vanoverschelde

A great episode of Game of Thrones just finished airing on HBO and we have a preview from next week's ep which is titled, 'Kissed by Fire.' Both episodes are directed by Alex Graves so look for continued excellence next Sunday.
As the episode title hints, look for the next episode to focus on Ygritte and Jon Snow. "Kissed by Fire" is a phrase commonly used by Wildlings to describe anyone with red hair. The episode is directed by Alex Graves and written by Bryan Cogman.

And here's a recap of Episode 04, 'And Now His Watch Is Ended' which was also directed by Alex Graves and written by David Benioff & D. B. Weiss.

Game of Thrones Season 3 will be based on A Storm of Swords, the third novel in the A Song of Ice and Fire book series from author George R.R. Martin. Due to the sheer length of the third novel, which is roughly 1.5 times the size of the first novel, the events of A Stomr of Swords will be split over two seasons. The cruel reign of the boy-king Joffrey Baratheon continues thanks to an alliance with House Tyrell. King of the North Robb Stark must decide whether to remain in the field against the Lannisters or return to Winterfell and address the actions of a traitor. Bran Stark journeys across a frozen wasteland to reach The Wall and what lies beyond. Daenerys Targaryen searches for an army to take back her homeland. Jon Snow must navigated dangerous waters filled with White Walkers and the bloodthirsty wildlings of the King-Beyond-the-Wall Mance Rayder.
After an amazing arc in the first series, Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys was reduced to petulant wailing about the whereabouts of her dragons in series two. But the fire and blood wrought by the Targaryen heiress last night confirmed that, though she’s a tiny little woman in a world of brutish men, Dany is not to be messed with. As you’d imagine the slave traders of Astapor would confirm. If they hadn’t been reduced to ashes in the thrilling climax, that is.

Dany’s power looks to be growing but things aren’t going so well for everyone else with Jaime sinking deeper into the mire (literally in one scene) after the loss of his hand. Playing a character many audience members have hated from the very start of Game of Thrones, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is doing sterling work to make us now feel something kinder for the Kingslayer. But he’s not alone in these bleak but revealing sequences, with Gwendoline Christie’s performance as Brienne getting better by the week.

Running Time: 60 minutes
Release Date: March 31, 2013 (Season 3)
TV Rating: TV-MA for sex & nudity, violence & gore, profanity, alchohol/drugs/smoking and frightening/intense scenes
Starring: Mark Addy, Michelle Fairley, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, Iain Glen, Aidan Gillen, Harry Lloyd, Kit Harington, Richard Madden, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams, Alfie Allen, Isaac Hempstead Wright, Jack Gleeson, Rory McCann, Peter Dinklage.
Creators: David Benioff (series), D. B. Weiss (series), George R. R. Martin (novels)
Written by: David Benioff, D. B. Weiss, Bryan Cogman, Jane Espenson, George R. R. Martin

Its a shock that these little brown Russian crepes have not broken out of the bistros of Notting Hill or Kensington (“Blini darling?”). These sweet and savory treats are commonly found by kiosks like Teremok in Moscow.

They’re conspicuously absent from anywhere in London that is remotely in danger of being prefixed with “roadside-” and Britain’s street food scene is all the worse for it.

Bolivia might not be what you think of when you think ‘street food in London’, but fried pork definitely will be. That’s why its absolutely bizarre that there aren’t at least three stands selling this greasy Bolivian meat dish in the capital.

Not really considered a main dish in it’s home country, these bits of fried pork have the potential to be an instant hit among an increasingly burger dominated street food scene.
