The trial continues for Aaron Ybarra, the man accused of the 2014 shooting at Seattle Pacific University. KING 5's Elisa Hahn is covering the latest developments in the trial, expected to last for several months.

2:30 p.m.: Dr. Roberta DeBoard, Ybarra’s school psychologist, takes the stand. She goes through an analyst of Ybarra’s test scores when he was young, around six years old. They showed he tested normal in some areas and close to being “mentally retarded” in others. He had a hard time paying attention.

Court adjourns for the weekend.

1:30 p.m.: Janice Ybarra says the day of the shooting she was in the kitchen and her husband, Ambrose, went to the computer and said, “There was a shooting at Seattle Pacific.”

Not long after that, “our home phone rang, and I saw it was the Seattle Times.” She said the reporter asked “'Are you missing the truck that is in your name?' I said ‘no.’ And they said ‘the truck in your name is at Seattle Pacific University.”

She said she had never talked to her son about the shooting that day because every time they had met after that, police were around.

On cross-examination, prosecutor Jessica Berliner asks Janice Ybarra if she knew the phone calls to the jail are recorded, and if that was the reason they never talked about the shooting. She confirmed it.

Janice Ybarra also told Berliner that nothing seemed out of the ordinary the day before the shooting, which was her husband’s birthday.

11:30 a.m.: Janice Ybarra continues her testimony. Describes a time when one of Joel’s friends stole cologne from Aaron and Aaron was obsessed about it for months.

“Aaron was extremely upset about the missing cologne. He talked about it. He hated the person. He would not let it go,” she said.

Aaron started drinking more when he turned 21. His dad was out of jail, and he would go to the bar with his dad.

“He was shaking and drinking regularly. This was after Joel (his brother) was gone. He was drinking every day and shaking, and he said he wanted to go to detox,” said his mother.

Aaron went to detox and ended up in the emergency room, because he said things that lead to “mental health concerns.” During this time his mother remembers that he first mentioned Columbine, and “the character in Columbine.” He started to get mental health counseling at this time.

Aaron got a DUI and had to go back to detox. Janice Ybarra talks about the struggle to get Aaron to pay his medical bills during this time.

11 a.m.: They take a break from Janice Ybarra’s testimony to have Dr. Bill Schnall, Aaron’s pediatrician, testify. He talks about Aaron’s delayed development at a young age in gross motor skills.

Schnall is an interesting choice of witness because of his past troubles. He was once accused of misconduct with his patients, but prosecutors did not press charges. According to past reports, he surrendered his license in 2005 and was forced to pay three of his patients $625,000.

Prosecutor Kristen Richards asks Schnall on cross, if was giving any diagnosis that Ybarra was insane at the time of the shooting, he said “no.”

Why I decided to begin this blog?

A few weeks ago I attended The Innovators Mindset Workshop put on by the SCIRA. I attended the conference with fellow student teachers and some of my host school's administration. The keynote speaker was George Couros, author of “The Innovator’s Mindset." After spending the day listening and interacting with George, I experienced a mindset shift. There were many things I took away from this conference: learning how to connect with your kids, ways to empower students, characteristics of the growth mindset, etc. All of it helped me to grow as an educator, but one of the most significant take aways, and where my perspective changed was technology in the classroom. Even as a 21 year old, who has grown up in a world of technology, I as an educator looked at technology in the classroom (primarily referring to iPads and laptops) as more of a distraction and nuisance to use. George opened my eyes. Technology is not something to be bothered by, it is a tool that needs to be utilized. The cool thing is, it's not just a tool for my students! I can use it too!

I'm looking for ideas on how to empower and engage students in 3rd grade. How do you build culture? Cc @gcouros

(Other than using a SmartBoard and pinteresting neat activities) In the middle of the conference, George took my phone and tweeted the tweet you see above to his 130,000+ followers. The responses I received, within five minutes, were phenomenal. In minutes, teachers from around the nation responded with ideas, website resources, and videos that I could use to build culture in my future classroom.

I realized that I could use something simple, like twitter, as a resource. For instance, if I am doing a unit on fossils I can tweet to the now hundreds of teachers that I follow asking for ideas, instant collaboration. I am so grateful to George for opening my eyes to the power of technology. Our society uses technology each and everyday, why not show kids how to use it as a tool and an educational resource? If we don't, as teachers we are doing them a injustice. We are striving to create meaningful learning experiences for our future college graduates, then we must use one of the most relevant used tools by their generation, technology.

I've decided to use this blog to grow my digital footprint and to use as a tool for both my career as a teacher and as a resource for my fellow educators. I will write about my experiences as a student teacher so that I can look back and use what I learn for my future classroom. I plan to post lessons and activities that I or my host teacher did with our students so that I can not only remember them but hope that others can benefit and use them in their classrooms.

The stories “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner both have their similarities as well as differences. In the story The Yellow Wallpaper, the narrator talks about a women who has postpartum depression; she cannot take care of her baby alone. The author also gives us a visual of how she is being treated by her husband. Her husband does not believe that she is sick. It then goes on to explain the love/ hate relationship she has with him. Now, with the story “A Rose for Emily” it clarifies how women are being treated as well as her also having a love/hate relationship with her father. She goes into a depression because her father’s death was too much for her to handle. Whereas Emily in “A Rose for Emily” struggles with depression, how she is treated, and her love/hate relationship with her father, in “The Yellow Wallpaper” her husband is the reason why she is feeling that way and also struggles with depression, how she is treated, and her love/hate relationship with her marriage.

Depression

Depression can have a different effect on certain people depending on how they are feeling; it is a mental illness that is very serious. In the story “The Yellow Wallpaper” she knows deep down that what she is feeling is not normal, but her husband does not believe her. Gilman describes how the character is feeling “I sometimes fancy that in my condition if I had less opposition and more society and stimulus –but John says the very worst thing I can do is to think about my condition, and I confess it always makes me feel bad” (305). She is trying to get her husband to understand that she does not like how she has been feeling and wants to get help. You cannot just simply turn off this illness like a switch; it does not work that way. She does not have anyone to turn to about what she is feeling. She slowly feels like she is going crazy and wants to stay away from her baby for that reason. Along the same lines, in “A Rose for Emily” the narrator gets the audience to understand why Emily is feeling the way she is. The people in her town cannot help but just feel sympathy towards her. The towns’ people explain how she is feeling “She was sick for a long time. When we saw her again, her hair was cute short, making her look like a girl, with a vague resemblance to those angels in colored church windows –sort of tragic and serene” (33). Emily does not know how to deal with her father’s passing and goes into a depression. She does not leave her house, and if she needs anything she sends her servant to do that for her. She keeps to herself and no one in the town really hears form her. Faulkner gives his readers a visual of what Emily is feeling though the town’s point of view. The Similarity between these stories is the fact that these women are mentally sick and do not know how to cope with what they are feeling which can lead them to lose touch with reality because in “A Rose for Emily”, Emily keeps her father’s dead body in the house for three days and in “The Yellow Wallpaper” she starts talking to the wallpaper.

Despite the characters having depression we can now see the different ways in which each protagonist copes. In “A Rose for Emily” the reader can conclude that she was in denial of what had happened to her father which led to depression, “Miss Emily meet them at the door, dressed as usual and with no grief on her face. She told them that her father was not dead” (32). It is interesting how Emily did not know exactly how to feel after her father’s death. Her emotions became numb. After a while the town’s people started to notice her getting depressed because of how isolated she became with everyone. As in “The Yellow Wallpaper” the reader can tell that she was concerned with her well-being because she did not know exactly what she was going through, “That spoils my ghostliness, I am afraid, but I do not care –there is something strange about the house –I can feel it” (305). She feels alone and isolated from her emotions because she feels that no one will listen to her. This describes what both stories are both going through with their depression but each is going through this illness differently.

Inequality Towards Women

In the 1800-1900s women we not treated in an equal way. They did not have a say in anything, and the men were the ones in total control over everything. In “The Yellow Wallpaper” the main character describes how she is frustrated with the fact that she does not feel good and the only reason why she does not get help is because her husband the doctor, does not think she is sick. Gilman discusses how hopeless she feels “If a physician of high standing, and one’s husband, assures friends and relatives that there is really nothing the matter with one but temporary nervous depression –a slight hysterical tendency –what is one to do? My brother is also a physician, and also of high standing, and he says the same thing” (305). She had no other choice but to battle her depression alone because men had the right to control women. As in “A Rose for Emily” the author explains how women in general were also not treated right, “-he who fathered the edict that no black women should appear on the streets without an apron –remitted her taxes, the dispensation dating from the death or her father into perpetuity” (30). Along the same lines, both stories were described the same based on the fact that these women had no say in anything.

Regardless of how similar both stories are about how women were treated, they had some differences. In “A Rose for Emily” the readers can conclude that Emily was a stubborn women and did not let anyone tell her what to do. Faulkner gives the audience a visual of how defensive Emily is by “See Colonel Sartoris. I have no taxes in Jefferson. But, Miss Emily- See Colonel Sartoris (Colonel Startoris had been dead almost ten years.), I have no taxes in Jefferson. Tobe! The back man appeared. Show these gentlemen out” (31). Emily did not let the men get the chance to talk more into detail about the taxes before she kicked them out of her house. Which shows the readers how strong of a person she is; not willing to let anyone talk down on her. As in “The Yellow Wallpaper” the protagonist was not as strong as a person. Gilman describes to the readers how she handled it “There comes John, and I must put this away –he hates to have me write a word. We have been here two weeks, and I haven’t felt like writing before, since that first day” (306). The readers can conclude that she feels that she has to make her husband happy by doing only what he would approve of. This describes what both stories are going through by being treated unequally by men. However, these women have a different way of dealing with inequality.

Love/Hate Relationship

There is a balancing force of love/hate feeling being displayed with the two stories. In “The Yellow Wallpaper”, Gilman describes how the main character has a love/hate relationship with her husband by “I get unreasonably angry with John sometimes. I’m sure I never used to be so sensitive. I think it is due to this nervous condition” (306). She hates him because she gets frustrated with how she cannot tell him how she is feeling without him not believing her. She is blaming her illness for the way she is acting but overall still loves him. As in “A Rose for Emily”, the narrator explains to the readers how her love/hate relationship is being displayed. He describes this emotion as “Miss Emily a slender figure in white in the background, her father a straddled silhouette in the foreground, his back to her and clutching a horsewhip, the two of them framed by the back-flung front door” (32). After her father’s death she is angry about what she went through with him when he was alive. She had a hard life with all the men in her life, but she still loves him because he is family. Along the same lines, both stories were described because it shows how their anger changes toward that person based on the love they have with them.

Although both stories are similar because of the love/hate relationship they had, there are some differences between these characters. In “The Yellow Wallpaper” the reader can conclude that the love she had towards her husband over rode her anger. Gilman describes this as “He is very careful and loving, and hardly lets me stir without special direction. I have a schedule prescription hour in the day; he takes all care from me, and so I feel basely ungrateful not to value it more” (306). She feels that he does a lot for her, so the least she can do is love him. As in “A Rose for Emily”, Faulkner explains how her anger over rode her love towards her father “We remembered all the young men her father had driven away, and we knew that with nothing left, she would have to cling to that which had robbed her, as people will” (32). She was hurt by what happened between her and her father; she let her anger control her and it took power over the love she had towards him. These two stories describe how both of the characters have a love/hate relationship towards their loved ones but it is mainly how they had a different way of coping with their emotions.

In conclusion, “The Yellow Wallpaper” and “A Rose for Emily” both have a good source of comparison as well as contrast between them. In the story The Yellow Wallpaper, Gilman talks about postpartum depression, and how it can really affect someone’s life. The narrator gives us a visual of how she cannot talk care of her baby alone. She is also not being treated fairly with her husband which causes her to develop a love/ hate relationship towards him. The author in “A Rose for Emily” explains to the readers how women are being treated as well as her also having a love/hate relationship with her father; Emily gets into a depression after her father’s death. Overall, we get a sense that both characters are battling a mental illness.
