The fact that Apple is generating $4.061 billion on iPod revenue, iTunes Store sales, iPod services, and iPod accessories vs. Microsoft’s $289 million loss on Zune and CE devices this would eventually start to take a toll.
Zune failed because they followed a trend instead of doing something original. They practically cloned another device and added some different specs. That's why were thought of as Ipod knockoffs within the portable media device custormer base and when their unit share of the market fell to a 0.5% in 2010 from a 0.9% that it was in 2006 it knew that it would never see the number two spot again and was time to throw in the towel. In November 15, 2015 Microsoft announced that it would discontinue Zune but hold all obligated warranties for customers who've purchased Zune till the last Zune is purchased.
