First period recap: Leafs started strong, particularly the line of Lupul-Kessel-Bozak. The Pens were on their heels a bit after puck drop. Momentum shifted after Engelland and Orr had an epic fight. How both men were standing at the conclusion defies science. Pens struck late with a power-play goal from Malkin to take a 1-0 lead into intermission.

#iXchat - Australia Day

This year Dr Tom Calma has called for 'a national debate on whether Australia Day should be moved to a more neutral date'. In recogntion of this call, we are going to discuss possible alternative dates for Australia Day on #iXchat tonight.

Storified by Luke Pearson · Wed, Jan 23 2013 17:28:20

We aren't discussing 'Should we change it?", because on twitter that would not be 'debate' so much as a 'troll-off'...
Instead, this forum is for those who think there is value in exploring the feasibility of possible alternative dates as a new 'National Day'.
#iXchat will start at 8:30pm NSW time, and I will be storifying some or all of the tweets that come in (depending on quality & quantity). Here is some background reading & viewing to get you warmed up :)

'Bumpin' Uglies' iOS game is out today

"Angry Birds," meet "Bumpin' Uglies."

The latter, like its superstar competition, is a slingshot-physics-type game for iPad and iPhone.

"Bumpin' Uglies," a product of a Minneapolis company called Ham in the Fridge, was released today.

I wrote a Pioneer Press business story about it:
Here's the game trailer:
Bumpin Uglies - Launch Trailer · pixelperfectgaming
The game was at one time a Kickstarter campaign that didn't succeed (but the developers forged ahead anyway).  Here's the main video for the crowdfunding effort:
Bumpin' Uglies Kickstarter Video · brethummel
The game got decent press from Mashable at the time (a follow-up story apparantly is in the works):
"Bumpin'" Uglies" is notable for its spherical characters, which are essentially body-less heads with cartoon-like features:
2 · ojezap
"Bumpin' Uglies" characters are customizable with an extensive assortment of skin shades, eye colors, mouth shapes and hairstyles:
3 · ojezap
"Bumpin' Uglies" is similar to the famed "Angry Birds," with roughly comparable obstacles and slingshot-style mechanics:
4 · ojezap
"Bumpin' Uglies" spheres are launched through intricate mazes with "shineys" amassed along the way for "mojo" or energy:
5 · ojezap
a key goal in "Bumpin' Uglies" is getting two characters bumping up against each other, which generates gaggles of "bumplings" like so:
1 · ojezap
I'm not much of a gamer, but I've been playing "Bumpin' Uglies and it's a lot of fun. It's a perfect casual game, very much in the "Angry Birds" vein. Try it!

According to the head of research at "The Israel Democracy Institute," religious and ultra-Orthodox Jews and settlers in the West Bank are expected to win a significant presence in the country's 19th Knesset.

In 2011, J14 protests focused attention on Israel's pressing socio-economic issues like the rising cost of housing and the growing gap between the country's rich and poor. The following video features the organisers of the J14 protests discussing how it will influence the election (click the "closed captions" button for English subtitles):

Many speculate Netanyahu's coalition will feature mostly right-wing parties. The Bayit Yehudi (or "Jewish Home") party was among the most popular, and supports pro-settlement policies such as annexing the West Bank. Below are two videos promoting the party:

Pretending to Be Buddies

I am so jealous of those people who have cats who actually like each other. You know, the kind of cats that will cuddle up next to each other and make a Yin Yang. It is a very rare moment in our household when our two will actually sit anywhere near each other. Sometimes, if they're really sleepy, I can manage to push them both next to each other in a forced spoon position for long enough to take a picture. But any close contact like that usually turns into biting, growling, and chasing. Maybe when Lola grows out of her teenage cat years they will be more affectionate with each other.

On rare occasions, however, I do catch them sneaking in a snuggle. One of those special moments happened this week.
Look at these two, pretending to be friends. You can't fool your mother. http://pic.twitter.com/qkuh71S1 · Catsburgh
They were even holding hands.

Guilty Face

Lola is a sneaky little guy. (Yes, I said guy). She loves stealing things, biting, and begging for food. This week I caught her red handed (red pawed?) as she knocked my coasters off of the table. Look at that guilty face.
Who knocked my coasters off the table? #guiltycat http://pic.twitter.com/SGxFUnJt · Catsburgh

Whatever Lola Wants, Lola Gets.

Lola will beg for anything. If you have it, she wants it. Pulling the milk out of the fridge? She's begging. Making popcorn? She's begging. Chopping onions? Begging.

This week we ordered in Thai food from our favorite spot. Guess what? Lola wanted it. And with that high-pitched baby meow she can pretty much get away with it. However, when we gave her a pea she just sniffed it.

Joaquin, on the other hand, refuses all people food and sticks to a strict diet of corn. (When I say "corn" I mean dry cat food. Read the ingredients sometime.)
Lola the pig is begging for Thai food. No peas for you! http://pic.twitter.com/4uenNdDm · Catsburgh

Joaquin the Rebel

Joaquin never begs. His favorite past time, rather, is jumping on stuff he's not allowed to jump on. He knows he's absolutely not allowed on the counter but that doesn't stop the fluffster. He loves to jump up there and lick the water faucet. (Gross.) You can yell at him, bang on stuff, throw things at him, but he won't get down until you physically push him off.

Here is Joaquin sneaking a drink from the faucet. Lola is just an innocent bystander.

At the Office On A Holiday

Monday was Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a holiday that most have off. My company, however, was open on Monday, which meant I spent the day in the office away from my kitties.

Early Symptoms of "Cat Lady" Syndrome?

I had a coupon code for Shutterfly for a freebie photo album (who doesn't have a coupon code for those things these days?) I decided this was a great opportunity/excuse to make an entire photo album filled with pictures of my cats. It arrived in the mail this week. (Does this make me a weirdo cat lady? Actually...probably not. I think this cat blog already accomplished that. Hashtag denial.)

Anywho... let me tell ya, best coffee table book EVER.

Grooming Time is Here

My adorable fluffy kitten has grown up to be a pretty shaggy cat. I think it's time for a haircut. Lola is such a well natured animal that I think she may actually tolerate the a trip to the groomer. Should we go for the lion cut?

We took Joaquin to get shaved at the beginning of last summer for the first time. He was so vicious and scary that the groomer refused to cut his hair. We ended up buying an electric razor and doing it ourself at our house. Yeah...that will require its own dedicated blog post.

Attack of the Vacuum

Lola could care less about the vacuum. Joaquin, on the other hand, heads for the hills! He usually darts off to the highest ground he can find in the house, typically the refrigerator. Vacuum trauma lasts for about an hour after it has been turned off and Joaquin refuses to budge.
The vacuum has started its weekly attack. Joaquin is taking high ground. #bewareofthevacuum #cats http://pic.twitter.com/gbRVVfZu · Catsburgh

PETA is an animal rights organization that completely opposes animal testing in all situations. Our group edited the poster of the Step Up Revolution movie to present PETA’s narrative. We replaced the heads of the dancers in the Step Up poster with heads of animals that products are tested on. The falling money in the original poster was replaced with various products that are tested on animals. This poster represents the animals fighting against the corporations and starting an anti-animal testing revolution.

PETA: People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals

PETA - Testing 1, 2, 3 · themolehole13

People for The Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is an orginazation that is for the full protection of animal rights and is one of the biggest voices against animal testing and crueltly. PETA was founded by Ingrid Newkirkand Alex Pacheco, they started PETA in March of 1980. PETA was know for doing extreme protest and soon got recognition for these extreme measures. Many people are not fond of PETA for many of the protest that they've held ranging from people standing out in public nude to ads with a nude women holding a cross in the church. They wanted to spread awareness of how much animals suffered from daily living by actually showing tapes on how animals were abused giving the public a raw truth to how soceity  treats animals who's voice is already muted.
PETA has a strong base in number membership 2 million worldwide they always conduct studies of how people feel about issues regarding cruel treatment towards animals. PETA's strongest tactics for their view on animal testing is going out to the labs and breaking in to save and set free the ones they can rescue. Celeberties are know for agreeing with PETA and making apprences at their events to help get the publics awareness on how they should feel. Jane Lynch, Bill Maher, Carol Leifer are a couple names that are known that would help PETA and get poeple to understand what labs do to animals.

ALTERNATIVE TO ANIMAL TESTING

FACT. 100 million animals are used worldwide each year for animal testing which is three per second.

Animal testing has been a controversial topic for several years, and activist groups such as PETA have since spoken out against this issue. Many have turned to stem cell research and in vitro (test tube) testing as a viable alternative to animal testing, due to their rapid, accurate results as well as being cruelty free. Alternative methods of testing like, working on synthetic human tissue will reduce or completely eliminate the need for animal testing.

Millions of animals are killed each year for research purposes, the safety of drugs, and other commercial brands. After all,“There is no doubt that the best test species for humans are humans,” According to Animal Rights group NEAVS. The New York Times raises concerns about the reliability of animal testing due to the inaccurate results, ending in certain drugs being discontinued and taken off the market meaning it poses risks for humans who take potentially unproven drugs. In fact, NEAVS’s website offers many reasons why animal testing won’t benefit us humans. In a lab test of 25 rabbits, 10 were misclassified. yielding a 40% error rate while, “...an in vitro test derived from cultured human skin cells, was found to be more accurate in identifying chemical skin irritants than traditional animal tests,” solidifying the truth in that an alternate way of testing products is much needed. In vitro tests are much more cost effective, environmentally friendly, and efficient. The results of In vitro tests return in as little as 3 minutes to 4 hours, while animal testing has a much longer waiting period of 4 weeks. “Animal experiments have caused immense suffering and wasted billions of dollars and decades of time that could have been spent finding the preventions, treatments, and cures humans need,” according to NEAVS, which brings to question, Why hasn’t this superior form of testing been implemented? The answer lies in the controversy of the subject.

Even with this slew of evidence, stem cell research, (and in vitro testing) remains ever so controversial. Many people like Reverend Thomas Keller of Saint Louis, Missouri oppose this type of research because it’s unnatural. He states,"The destruction of human life, even in it's embryonic form, is something that is evil that we don't want to participate in. We want to educate our folks that there's more to the story than simply saying this is a type of research on human cells." The idea of playing God,” and creating and destroying life is a touchy subject among many opposed to this method of testing. A second reason why this alternate method of testing drugs and cosmetics is debated is the safety of it. Without it being tested, people are bound to be worried. But as Animal Aid, UK’s largest animal rights group, says, “...there are 8,000 established ingredients! Surely this is enough for companies to work with. Companies are able to trick people out of their money by producing 'a revolutionary new formula to banish split ends' or 'new longer lasting lipstick'. However, if the product contains new ingredients, animal suffering will have taken place in its formulation. TV ads constantly show the newer version of an existing product, with added subtle changes in the formula, and in return animals will pay the price for vanity.

In stem cell research, there is this belief that embryos are killed in the process of research, the National Institutes of Health says otherwise stating, “ Stem cells have the remarkable potential to develop into many different cell types in the body. Serving as a sort of repair system for the body, they can theoretically divide without limit to replenish other cells as long as the person or animal is still alive,” and ultimately conclude that stem cell research cannot take place if the embryos are dead. The cells used for testing are instead acquired through donor cells. By taking advantage of this innovative alternative, lab tests can end the need of animal testing according to Professor Mummery of the Leiden University Medical Center who clarifies that, “[many drugs] affect the animal cells but don't have an effect on human cells." This statement solidifies the irrelevance of animal testing. President of the Institute of In-Vitro Sciences, Roger D. Curren, says, “The report says we now have the tools to look much more closely on how toxicity occurs, and that we have to do it on human cells.” By saying science today is far more advanced, he draws the conclusion that animal testing today is obsolete, and unnecessary when we have the technology to create something with the likeness of our own skin.
Realizing the harm and suffering cast upon millions of animals per year, many cosmetic companies have stepped up to the plate and taken stances on producing cruelty free products. Urban Decay for example is a very well known makeup brand which happens to not test on animals, and the company L’Oréal has spent over $800 million on using alternative testing methods. According to the Leaping Bunny, a website dedicated to buying cruelty free makeup reveals,“While a company may claim, “We do not test on animals,” it could still contract other companies to do the testing.” The only way to be sure is if those companies have certain logos on their packaging validating the item, certified by the Leaping Bunny program. Brands such as Urban Decay are steering away from the Chinese Market that requires cosmetics to be tested on animals before being used on humans, while others big name brands like Yves Rocher and L’Occitane are abandoning their old policies to expand their business. Michelle Thew, chief executive of Cruelty Free International, expresses her disbelief of those brands retracting from the Leaping Bunny program. “I am disappointed that certain companies have fallen prey to the lure of the Chinese market and are letting animals pay the price. Consumer pressure can make a difference,” says Thew. By enforcing this law, China is promoting animal testing 'I am disappointed that certain companies have fallen prey to the lure of the Chinese market and are letting animals pay the price. Consumer pressure can make a difference. It's unnecessary for China to require repeat and totally unnecessary testing on these products,” says Dr. Dan Lyons, a campaign director for Uncaged, an animal protection organization. As long as policies like the one in China remain active, the incentive of companies starting or continuing animal testing will stay as well.

In order to become a cruelty free society, these policies need to be changed for the sake of humans as well as animals. With animal testing, errors are frequent and often go by unnoticed and end up on humans. In vitro and other forms of testing have already proven to work more efficiently, and will propel science into the future. If this alternative testing method is merged into society, the future will be in a better place.

Pro-Testing

Colored by moi, drawn by Sophie #idp · Allen
Animal testing has been a widely used research tactic for a long time, but it hasn't been without backlash. Popular organizations like People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) are well-known for their protests against animal testing.Though the media tends to spotlight the outspoken anti-testing activists, there are many people speaking up on the other side of the issue.
Large pharmaceutical companies and most medical doctors and scientists are the biggest supporters of animal testing. They know the benefits from animal testing are not just for make up products and air fresheners; these tests have been essential to medical breakthroughs like cures for cancers, asthma and various diseases. Many scientists and college based groups have started awareness groups about how this is a helping cause to the future of the human kind. They are supporting research and the advancement of science, where animal testing may be the only option. Money also is an issue for the companies, and there are not any economical alternatives.

Match 1, Group B - Ghana defeated Mali (1-0)

Ghana went into this match having to win to relieve some pressure on themselves by topping the group. They started very brightly looking threatening on the break but just 5 minutes into the game, their keeper did something very very silly!

Ghana goalkeeper Dauda escapes sending off

Wrong decision? Right decision? Lenient decision? You be the judge, but one thing is for sure, most referees would have sent the keeper off!

Ghana win a penalty, Wakaso scores to make it 1-0.

The Black Stars recovered well from their early scare and kept attacking Mali with quick counter attacks. One of them resulted in a penalty. This decision though was the correct one, and Mubarak Wakaso slotted home confidently from the spot, but then got booked for displaying a message under his shirt in his goal celebration.

The referee goes whistle-happy

Both teams were really up for the game and looked threatening whenever they went forward, but they couldn't get into any kind of rhythm because the referee was having too much fun blowing his whistle. So many fouls were called that everyone lost count. It was surprising that no red cards were thrown around too!

Dauda wins man of the match and people wonder why Asamoah Gyan is captain.

The game ended with Ghana winning 1-0. Mali didn't create many chances, and the guy who could have gotten sent off won man of the match! Talk about rubbing salt on a wound!

Healthy Chicken Recipes

0
0

Chicken is a popular protein source because it’s versatile and low in saturated fat. Americans now consume more chicken than beef or pork, but it’s still not helping our nation eradicate obesity since people prepare chicken in such unhealthy ways.

Storified by Arnie Kaye Dillen · Thu, Jan 24 2013 19:26:59

Chicken has oftentimes been viewed as a healthier alternative to other types of meat such as beef and pork.  Though it is also an animal product with an amount of cholesterol and saturated fat, it is easier to lessen this by removing the skin, where most of the fat is, or by choosing the breast portion (white meat) rather than the thigh and drumstick (dark meat).

Unfortunately, with the advent of commercialization, situations of high demand and low supply, or sometimes just the desire of manufacturers for a better profitability, most animal products are nowadays raised with the assistance of synthetic feeds and growth hormones.  These results in animals being ready for processing in a fraction of the time compared to when they’re raised with natural feeds like grass and grains.  For chickens, what normally takes more than a month to be ready it can be shortened to just a few weeks with plumper, juicier meat to boot.

The downside of this is the concerning fact that more and more research has shown that all these chemicals could potentially be harmful when consumed by humans.  The solution to this if one really wants a healthy chicken dish is to go free-range and organic which means that the birds have not been fed with synthetic feeds nor injected with hormones.  Free-range chickens are also grown in an open space rather than kept in cramped cages.  This affects the tenderness of the dish made with it so be extra careful in preparation.

Now that we have a wholesome nutritious product to cook let’s make it even healthier by combining it with other great ingredients with a smaller amount of oil.  Rather than breading and deep-frying which just soaks up grease, why not bake, braise or stew it instead together with nutrient-dense and fiber-rich brown rice, an assortment of vegetables and even fruit?

Lastly, if your family doesn’t want to give up their favorite fried chicken, by all means give it a healthy twist by breading the chicken pieces in whole wheat bread crumbs, oat meal or cereal.  Drizzle with a bit of olive oil and bake until crisp and golden brown.  Serve with a fresh salad and home-made low-fat gravy.  Now isn’t that much better than a bucket of store-bought greasy fast food?

It was a lot of fun getting prepared for my very 1st Twitter chat. I chose the topic of uterine fibroids since I recently had a laproscopic myomectomy to have my fibroid removed. (A laproscopic myomectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure where the surgeon makes small incisions in the abdomen to detach the fibroid from the uterus and remove it from the abdomen. It differs from a hysterectomy, in that a myomectomy leaves the uterus and ovaries intact, thus preserving fertility.)

Participation in my 1st chat was pretty lite, but as with anything, there is a learning curve. Please check out the transcript below. There are some links to resources included as well. I welcome all questions, comments and suggestions you have about fibroids or any other topics of interest for future Twitter chats.
