Everyone knows Columbus as the explorer who discovered the "New World". But many people overlook the fact that Columbus took the lives of many. I take stand with the people whom see him as a villain and are staying away from celebrating Christopher Columbus Day. He treated the Native Americans very poorly and took advantage of them. He wanted to change the entire Native Culture. Columbus wanted to convert the Indians to Christians because he thought that they worshiped the devil with all their beliefs in spirits and rituals. He also turned the Natives into slaves and the women and young girls into sex slaves. They would rape these women having no remorse which led to a lot of their deaths. The diseases that Columbus and his men brought to the Natives also ended the lives of many Natives. All of this for what we may ask ourselves? Columbus just wanted to become a richer man and he didnt care if that meant taking the lives of others. Christopher Columbus did more bad than good.

I believe this video to be very credible because it was made by Alex Gendler. Alex is a writer, editor, translator, and general dilettante with specialties ranging from history to political theory. He has made several lessons that have been published in The Washington Post and Time Magazine. He also has a BA in English and philosophy. This video was assigned to be read in my class and it played a part in making me question whether it was right to celebrate Christopher Columbus Day.

In the video one of the first things it said was "The United States and Latin America have grown up celebrating the anniversary of Christopher Columbus voyage. But was he an intrepid explorer who broguht to worlds together or a ruthless exploiter who crought colonialism and slavery, and did he even discover America at all? It talks about how Christopher Columbus Day has been moved around so we could celebrate a three day weekend and how people are changing the name and calling it something else.

It states that opposition to Columbus Day dates back to the 19th century when anti-immigrant groups rejected the holiday. It talks about how Native Americans have also protested against it because they suffered a loss of millions.It mentioned that in Latin American nations the anniverasry of Columbus Day is celebrated as Dia de la Raze instead.

Are students today getting the entire story, in all its bloody treachery and cruelty, so that they can evaluate history and make up their own minds? If the Columbus myth taught in schools has been replaced by all the facts, then future generations will have a better chance of understanding our history and each other.

As time goes by, less and less people as well as states are celebrating Columbus Day. Columbus Day is an official holiday yet individual states are not required to celebrate it. There are only twenty-three states that close public services on that day. Christopher Columbus Day has been moved around to make a three-day weekend for people. So that to me shows that its more about the days off than actually celebrating what happened. In my eyes i dont see Columbus as a hero. He did so many terrible things to the Native people that I dont consider were necessary. I dont believe he discovered anything since there people already living in those lands. I also dont plan on celebrating Columbus Day anymore and I ask everyone to reconsider celebrating the crimes that Columbus committed.

Me llamo Noemi y estudio en la Universidad de La Laguna. Son las 14:30pm y me dirijo hacia mi casa. Vivo a tres manzanas de mi universidad, pero cada día se me hace más largo el camino, entre el calor y el peso que llevo en la mochila, esto es insoportable.
Todos los días llego a casa, lanzo la mochila a los pies dela silla que está en el comedor y me siento a comer. A continuación, me siento en el escritorio de mi habitación abro el libro y me pongo a estudiar, a memorizar y escribir muchas veces lo mismo para que no se me olvide en el examen. Total, ya mañana cuando termine podré olvidarme del examen y ser libre.
