‎. NEWTOWN, Conn. -- Three miles from Sandy Hook Elementary School, a white Colonial-style building stands about 50 feet back from the road, an unassuming presence in a town that never got much attention until now. On a recent day, a security guard got out of a parked car at the end of the driveway and said he’d received instructions to turn away anyone who didn’t work in the building. It wasn't hard to see why his employers might have hired him. In what appears to be a bizarre coincidence, the people working inside were among the country's most adamant champions of the kinds of weapons and ammunition that Adam Lanza used to kill 26 children and adults just down the road last week.

The Newtown-based National Shooting Sports Foundation, or NSSF, is the nation's premier gun manufacturers trade association, and in recent years the group has concentrated on marketing military-style assault weapons of the kind used by Lanza, James Holmes and other ma...ss murderers. In the last decade, as the national interest in hunting has declined, gun manufacturers have increasingly relied on the sale of high-powered rifles, capable of killing many people in seconds. Behind the scenes, the NSSF has done much of the work of pitching those products to politicians, the media and gun buyers.

Doug Painter, a former NSSF president, delivered a pitch characteristic of the NSSF’s folksy approach in a video released by the group in 2009, a year when many gun-owners were worried that the newly Democratic White House would try to take away their weapons.

Holding up the same kind of rifle that Adam Lanza would eventually use to commit mass murder, Painter asked the camera, “Am I gonna trade in Ol’ Betsy for one of these?” He answered himself, “Maybe not. But there’s a more important point to consider. Anti-gun folks insist on labeling these rifles as ‘bad guns,’ as opposed to more traditional-looking ‘good guns.’ How can any inanimate object be considered ‘good’ or ‘bad’?”

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/12/22/national-shooting-sports-foundation-newtown_n_2348465.htmlSee More

You have to understand most people are scared to give up their guns out of fear of the Government.. Police have been killing innocent victims on a consistent basis for awhile now.. The deaths of innocent people are not new or limited to the Elementary School. They are happening almost on a daily basis by our public officials who are supposed to be keeping us safe. People fear the Government with Guns. In Germany I was told the police don't carry guns and even when they pull you over you are only required to roll down your window an inch to pass out your Drivers Licence. My friend from Germany was more scared to be here because of the police presence then anything else.

The Internet mourns the death of Aaron Swartz

Aaron Swartz committed suicide last night. Aaron was 26, brilliant and had already had made more of an impact on technology and Internet culture by his 21st birthday than many people will ever have in a lifetime.

Boston Wiki Meetup · ragesoss

“Aaron built surprising new things that changed the flow of information around the world"-Susan Crawford

"Aaron Swartz made a deep impression on everyone he met — whether it was his obvious brilliance, his cutting wit or his ardent dedication to issues concerning the Internet, public rights and civil liberties"-John Schwartz
Cory Doctorow remembered him thoughtfully in a graceful eulogy at BoingBoing:
"There is no way to express the sadness of this day," said friend, mentor, and Harvard law professor Lawrence Lessig. "There will be many words, eventually, to express its anger. This story will infuriate you. For now, to the co-creator of RSS, of the Creative Commons architecture, of part of Reddit, and of endless love and inspiration and friendships, rest. We are all incredibly sorry to have let you down."

"Aaron’s insatiable curiosity, creativity, and brilliance; his reflexive empathy and capacity for selfless, boundless love; his refusal to accept injustice as inevitable—these gifts made the world, and our lives, far brighter. We’re grateful for our time with him, to those who loved him and stood with him, and to all of those who continue his work for a better world.

Aaron’s commitment to social justice was profound, and defined his life. He was instrumental to the defeat of an Internet censorship bill; he fought for a more democratic, open, and accountable political system; and he helped to create, build, and preserve a dizzying range of scholarly projects that extended the scope and accessibility of human knowledge. He used his prodigious skills as a programmer and technologist not to enrich himself but to make the Internet and the world a fairer, better place. His deeply humane writing touched minds and hearts across generations and continents. He earned the friendship of thousands and the respect and support of millions more."-Official Statement from the Family and Partner of Aaron Swartz

I met him briefly in Cambridge and primarily knew him through interactions over social media and his writing. He was tirelessly devoted to sharing information online, particularly government and academic research and legal articles, a focus that embroiled him in controversy and courtrooms in recent years. Here's Swartz' Wikipedia entry, now updated:
As Declan McCullagh reflected this morning, "Swartz was facing possible life in prison because he allegedly tried to make journal articles public."
Gawker collected some of his references to depression:

Social Media

This year in Mass Media, I have learned about many different things like Media Consumption in the 21st Century, Internet 101/Internet Hacking, Social Media Activism, Viral Video's, news industry/advertising, structure of society, and the music industry. The most interesting of all was Social Media.

Storified by · Mon, Jan 14 2013 19:28:14

This article is all about how social media can affect your job by what you do and what you put online. My favorite quote from this article is "Your first impression isn't made with a firm handshake—it's with a Google search". I believe that this statement is very true. Last year in English 10, my teacher asked us to google ourselves to see how much information about us was put out there for the world to see and surprisingly, there was a lot more than just Facebook pictures and twitter accounts. One student became red in the face as she learned about what was put on the internet about her. As you can see, things on the internet will never be deleted and they could affect you later in life.
After reading this article, I worry about the future and how the minds of the next generations will be affected. One alarming piece of information that came from this article was that social media habits can make your child a fast learner, but they can also lead to many psychological disorders. It's scary how social media is becoming so popular so fast. The next few generations, including my own, have been taken over by a technological world and the vast use of social media. My 9th grade english teacher also had a story about Facebook and how it can affect the future. Her niece had been applying for a huge internship she had wanted to work for but once the company found something on her Facebook page, she immediately was turned down. This article is a wake up call to those who think posting on Facebook is safe and non dangerous thing.
This article is a positive view on how the internet and social media is changing the world. Something that caught my eye was "No matter our religion, economic status, political beliefs, or the color of our skin, the Net Generation loves to share favorite apps, complain when Twitter is down, and debate the latest Facebook innovation." I completely agree with this statement on how we are all coming together on social media. The internet never stops growing and neither does it users. Social media is changing our world to become a more amazing place. I think there's never enough technology to use.

This video has TONS of great information. Anyone who is interested in social media or just some really cool facts should watch this. It tells you how long wikipedia would be if it was made into a book, how many people have a Facebook today, interesting facts about Google, and much more. This video has gone viral and is intriguing many young social media users around the world. By watching this video, you can learn a lot about where you fit into the crazy, mixed-up media world.

¿Lo jugarías? #monopoly #socialmedia #game #fun #communitymanager · Ochenta20
In conclusion, social media is changing the way we communicate, changing the ways we learn, and changing our world to be a better place. I definitely see a larger use of social media in my future and in the future of the world.

Atlantic Advertorial's Day in the Sun

$

If you were away from Twitter Monday evening, you may have missed a new media blowup. An advertorial touting Scientology on The Atlantic's website generated fast and fierce reactions among media observers and those in the industry. Let's take a look.

Storified by Dave Burdick · Mon, Jan 14 2013 19:29:35

Jared Keller, former social media czar of The Atlantic, helpfully gets us started with a bang:
He's referring to a marked advertorial piece on The Atlantic. This one:
It's pretty gushing, as advertorials often are: "The driving force behind this unparalleled era of growth is David Miscavige, ecclesiastical leader of the Scientology religion. Mr. Miscavige is unrelenting in his work for millions of parishioners and the cities served by Scientology Churches. He has led a renaissance for the religion itself, while driving worldwide programs to serve communities through Church-sponsored social and humanitarian initiatives."
There are a few types of takes on it. There are those who are resigned to (and not deluded about) the existence of advertorial content...
...there's the pope of journalism criticism, asking the question he knows the answer to...
...the people who are furious...
...and of course there's a parody account.
@markzawaki alleges that a popular (and critical) comment was taken down
Hey .@TheAtlantic, what's with censoring/deleting very popular comments? @kissane @matmullins #scientology http://pic.twitter.com/DzXwNbDv · Mark Zawacki
It's apparent that the comment policy is different for advertorial content than it is for editorial content.
FYI, all comments on Atlantic scientology piece have to be approved by a moderator. No moderation on regular stories. http://yfrog.com/h4yooyp · Ross Neumann
Atlantic staffers start finding clever ways to signal their independence from the advertorial.
