Intellectual Property for Remixed Music

Remixing music is becoming a fashion nowadays, it not only encourages the modern youth to be more creative in music, but also remixing provides some new jobs, like DJs. In theory, remix is a reinterpretation of an existing songs. Although it sounds like remix is an obviously copied work, but remix is legal. However, does one have to seek permission from a musical artist in order to use their song for remix? For example, many people upload their own remix songs on YouTube and gain popularity from it.
This source discusses the ethics of stealing and borrowing music. Artists or DJ’s are able to target a certain group of audience and then make a name for themselves by appealing to this certain group. However, this often happens illegally as artists will use other artists’ work and alter it to create their own. It says that in order for artists to cover a song, they must obtain a license to distribute, cover, and alter music that they do not own. It also mentions that these types of lawsuits are usually determined on a case-by-case basis but it is generally safer for artists to obtain a license from a copyright owner to legally record a version of a song. This is due to the fact that cases become hard to determine whose fault it is because of things such as “creative freedom” or “coincidence”. This article also discusses platforms that artists will use such as YouTube because this gives them freedom to create and upload their own videos. The issue with this is that artists can become famous and profit from someone else’s work with very little modification. Through this, it must be made sure that no one can use such platforms to unfairly benefit from other people’s work.
After knowing the ethical issue of stealing and borrowing music, musicians also need to know the copyright concerns for them.
This article basically provides tips for navigating through the intellectual property law which is related to musicians especially who try to refer to other’s work in performance and composition. It also related to how the remix songs may affect the producer of both the original songs and the remixed songs as well as the copyright law involved in the process. By firstly explicitly listing all the official law of United States which involved in the process, the source is convincing to some extent.
In a sense of remixing music is legal, how to remix a song legally would be a question for some creative musicians who are interested in remix music. This article provides an explanation of music remix and the related law. Also, the legal checklist in this article tells musicians what should they do before they remix songs. Lastly, after remix is done, are musicians free to play their work in clubs?
With gaining a lot of useful information about remix music, how does a music can be changed or change to what extent, so that it will become a new music might be an interesting problem for musicians.
To know it, we can think about an easy question, when is remix stealing from the original? This article provides a two key questions for musicians examining the use of copyrighted material, it would be a basic knowledge for remix musicians.
This website discusses examples in which borrowing lines/music from another artist was controversial. It answers the question of how much music a musician can borrow from someone else to use in their own song. Music is a hard subject to analyze when it comes to copyright because it is hard to discern between inspiration and theft. It also goes on to say that a court looks for two things when analyzing these types of cases: proof of access to the original piece and proven similarity. Once one of the two is proven, it lessens the need for the other one. Through two examples of controversial cases, this article shows how difficult it can be to closely analyze two pieces of work in order to determine if they are too similar.

Copyright is a legal protection that that provides creators of works such as art, music, literature, or software rights over how their works may be used or distributed. In the U.S., the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) defines the protections and liabilities of those posting copyrighted content online. Internationally, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Copyright Treaty serves as an extension of the Berne convention and has been adopted by 93 countries.
Copyright is beneficial to society in that it prevents plagiarism and use of content without permission or attribution. However, copyright terms are too long, fair use isn’t clearly defined enough, and filing false/inappropriate copyright take down notices lack sufficient punishment.

10 countries in the world have over 70% of the child laborers, including India, China, and Pakistan. In those countries, child laborers often lure children from poor communities to faraway factories or farms. The workers are promised that they'll be paid, but instead they end up owing money. The workers' employers charge them for food and fine them if they don't work fast enough. The workers' debts increase, keeping them bonded to employers they can never pay off.
Millions of children in India spend their childhood working and do not have an opportunity to play, go to school, or live in a healthy environment.
Global Goals : No Poverty
Poverty is a big part to child labor. The child laborers all around the world seek for the ones that are vulnerable - people in debt or people that need money - so it is easier to get workers. Most of these people live in poverty, earning less than three dollars a day. If the father in the family gets sick, then another family member seeks work, and is lured into child labor. Therefore, if we completely eradicate poverty, children around the world will have a less chance of being in child labor.

Child Labor-Can It Be Abolished?
Child labor has been going on in India for a quite a while, and it must be eradicated as it has a detrimental effect on the children.

In India, plenty of children suffer from child labor. Many of the children have been tricked into doing the unruly work, but some have contributed to work for money. Whether the children have signed up to work or not, the work that the children have to do remains atrocious. The working conditions are poor, no education is provided, and the children are barely paid. Child labor should be abolished as it severely harms many children.

Cotton work is one of the most common work that is available for children in India. Many children who are in a state of child labor that do cotton work have to spend their everyday opening cotton buds. Some of the children sew up the cotton to make goods such as carpets and clothes. When an interviewer asked a girl named Kali Gamar how old she was, she said that she might be ten, but she was not sure. When two eleven-year olds were interviewed, they did not say anything because they were too anxious and frightened to say anything. Evidently, the children who work in the cotton factories have lost memories of their life they had with their families before separation, and now they are unsure of many things about themselves. Furthermore, many doctors state that the cotton fields are environments that are extremely harsh for the children as it can cause lung disease for them at an early age. As a result, many of these children in the cotton factories live a life of despair and impotence.
Many children are tricked into child labor because of their parents or their own stupidity, but some children sign up for the job themselves. Many families in India live in a state of poverty, so that results in not having enough money to buy food regularly or not having enough money to have a home. For example, fourteen-year old Arun Kumar was a teenager who lived with his uncle and two younger siblings. Living in a poor village, the family was not able to make enough money to get an adequate amount of food. When Arun became desperate to relieve his family's hunger, he decided to look for a job so that he could make money for the family. Arun went to lots of places to work, and the places he went to were kilometers away from his village. His work was sometimes dangerous as it involved heavy machinery. Although Arun worked very hard for months, he was only paid a bit less than eight-hundred rupees a month (eight-hundred rupees is around twenty dollars). Clearly, many children in India are paid only a small amount of money despite all their days/months of diligent working. Concludingly, the children who volunteer to toil in factories should be paid fairly so that they can earn enough money to support their family.
As shown in the two situations of child labor, the children have to suffer their everyday working without time to do anything else. The children have been trapped into or have contributed to their work because their family was poor. The parents of the children were unable to earn enough money to provide food, a house, and a decent education all at the same time. If the children were able to get a free or cheap education, they would have a chance to improve their lives by excelling at school, getting into a good college, and possibly finding an adequate job. This way, the parents would not have to worry about their financial problems as much as they had to before due to not having to spend a lot of money on education. By providing quality education to all children, child labor might be abolished as financial problems would not be as serious as before to many families which means that parents and children would not be frantic to earn money. In conclusion, quality education should be provided to all children around the world as it gives children a chance to have a brighter future as well as a chance for child labor to get completely abolished.

Overly Disruptive YouTube
YouTube allows people to share and connect with others globally and it has changed societies in many different ways.

YouTube gave a whole new outlet for people to share and to view content. Before the era of viral videos, people would watch videos through traditional media like cable television. Although television does provide high quality work, it does not provide the immediacy and convenience that YouTube does. YouTube has affected people on the micro and the macro level. In this storify, I will be looking into the social effects that YouTube has on entertainment, work, relationships, and education. My research will include the different uses and trends that have developed throughout its existence. Along with including facts about these social issues, I will share personal experiences I have had while using YouTube. Through exploring changes in these social issues, I will be recognizing the global impact YouTube has on society and will be providing my thoughts and insights about its future.
Social Issue: Change in Entertainment
Before YouTube, we used to watch shows on the TV, go to the movies, listen to the radio, or read books. But now, YouTube has made it possible to spend hours online watching videos about anything and everything. Originally, the purpose of YouTube has been to simply share videos online. The first YouTube video ever is titled, "Me at the Zoo." However, society has diversified its use and found YouTube as a form of entertainment. Entertainment on YouTube is done in a number of ways - through music videos, short films, product reviews, gaming, rants, vlogs, etc.
Before YouTube, the main source of entertainment for people was through television. Although television produces high quality videos, it also has a very strong censorship. On YouTube, anyone can make videos about anything quickly and easily. YouTube not only increased the speed of which videos are shared, but it also widened the audience to anybody who has Internet. Because of this speed, videos are able to go 'viral.' The video by Watchmojo below shows top 10 viral videos of all time.
Disruptive Impact: Because of YouTube, people have been removing cable subscriptions for online streaming substitutes as their main source of entertainment. Personally, I rarely watch TV anymore because I'm subscribed to so many channels on YouTube that I never feel the need to turn on my TV.
Predictions: Although I’ve seen a few original series and short films on YouTube, I see the scale of original content growing even more in the near future as people become more invested (in terms of time) in YouTube.
Social Issue: Change in Work
Uses: Careers have been made because of YouTube. Gamers, beauty gurus, daily vloggers have used YouTube as a platform to start their careers. Businesses have used YouTube to market their products.
Trends: I've been noticing an increasing trend of daily vloggers on YouTube. Instead of posting weekly or monthly videos, YouTubers are becoming more public and are sharing their daily lives with the world. This may be a cause of TMI, but for me, I found daily vloggers that I religiously follow, like FunForLouis and CaseyNeistat. The video below is a recap of Funforlouis's year traveling the globe.
Disruptive Impact: On the macro level, a new industry of jobs has developed because of YouTube. People from all over the world are not only becoming known, but are also making a living out of posting videos on YouTube.
Predictions: The more people accept YouTube as a platform for success, the more people will be comfortable with using YouTube as a starting platform.

Uses: Online and offline relationships have been made through interactions on YouTube.

Adding social media - Start by searching any of the "sources" you see on the right side of the story editor. Storify lets you easily embed anything from the search results into your story by dragging and dropping it in.
For example, access the Twitter "source" by clicking on the Twitter logo on the right. You can do a general Twitter search in the area that appears, like typing in "storify" to see the latest Tweets talking about us. Drag and drop any search result into this story. When you're done, it looks like this:

With student debt sky rocketing it has become increasingly difficult for many students to feed themselves, much less enjoy their favorite music. This music can often help students release stress and escape the constant pressure of earning their education or in some cases, it can even stimulate focused studying. For that reason many students have turned to downloading free media online. The industry has responded by forcing those students to pay thousands of dollars in fees. College student Joel Tenebaum was forced to pay $22,500 per song that he downloaded. Having downloaded 30 songs, the sum came out to $675 K.
The Villains
The Recording Industry Association of America, or RIAA, is one of the main organizations hunting down college students. They outline on their website what they and the law have to say about what constitutes illegal sharing. On February 2007 they announced their agenda to target college students specifically in a plan that involves sending thousands of pre litigation letters to universities to hand over to their students. Some universities have outright refused to be the RIAA's "legal agent" while others are issuing their own fines for receiving the letters.
Think a major corporation wouldn't spend millions of dollars sweating the small stuff? In high school I made playlists from mixed CDs I owned and burnt copies for the people I loved. Was I a criminal or another student innocently making a mix tape? According to the RIAA, that was criminal activity and could have resulted in a felony record, five years in jail, or up to $250,000 in fines. Apparently, the RIAA considers ""schoolyard" piracy — copies of physical discs given to friends and classmates — a greater threat than illegal peer-to-peer downloading."
How do the RIAA and other organizations catch and exploit college students? According to the article below, they plant files that they think people are likely to download. When people download the file the organizations are able to get that person's IP address which they store for later use. This method of entrapment is apparently legal and commonly used to catch people participating in file sharing red handed.
College Enforcement of the Law
I currently attend UCSD. Here's their statement: "Over 100 UC San Diego students have been sued for copyright violations, some for the first time they shared a copyrighted file. UC San Diego received nearly700 copyright violation notices last school year. Students can get advice from Student Legal Services, but are responsible for all of the legal costs and penalties. What you think is free may end up costing you thousands of dollars." The first offense is a warning to a student and gives them a class about why they were caught and what they can do to prevent being caught again. In just 3 violations the student loses all internet access on campus, this not only costs UCSD money to enforce but it also forces the student to do any internet related work off-campus.
Think about the ramifications of no longer being able to access the internet on campus. Not only are you losing the social aspect of the internet, you're more importantly losing the educational one. Any homework or research has to be done somewhere off campus at the already debt ridden student's expense.
The Money Involved in the Lawsuits
Why does the RIAA even care about college students? If you take a look at the finances of their war against the little people only 2% of the money they invest in these lawsuits they get back! Over the course of three years they spent $58.3 million dollars and recovered $1.3 million dollars in return.
To answer that question, CNET's Don Reisinger interviewed Cara Duckworth, spokeswoman for the RIAA. "When asked why the RIAA is going after an easy target--college students--the response made me cringe: "College students have reached a stage in life when their music habits are crystallized," Duckworth said. "And their appreciation for intellectual property has not yet reached its full development."" Personally I have trouble interpretting her exact meaning. College students are... dumb? Incapable of morality? A generation that can be easily generalized while also lacking legal defenses?

What is vegetarianism?
Being a vegetarian means to not eat meat. There are many different styles of being a vegetarian. It all depends on how much and what animal products are being avoided in the diet. These variations range from being a Lacto-ovo-vegetarian, where no meat is eaten, but eggs and milk are, to a Vegan, where no animal products at all are used or consumed. There are also Pescatarians which eat fish and seafood but no meat. Becoming a vegetarian is a personal choice that depends on particular consignment of how and what you want to eat.
History of vegetarianism
Vegetarianism has been around since before recorded history and was the prevalent diet. Before the 1800's, vegetarians were known as Pythagoreans, after the Greek mathematician, Pythagoras. The British Vegetarian Society coined the term vegetarian, the Latin root of the word refers to the Source of Life.
Vegetarianism in the United States
The popularity of vegetarianism exploded in the United States in the 1970's, when an author by the name of Frances Moore Lappe wrote a book, detailing the amount of grain it takes to feed livestock being raised for food. It was in an effort to solve world hunger to show that the number of grain could be better used to feed the hungry in the world and it described a substitute vegetarian diet instead of meats. It was a huge success and "launched the vegetarian movement in the United States. Vegetarian cookbooks, restaurants, co-ops, and communes started appearing out of nowhere" (Bluejay). It created a movement for animal rights as well, and the inception of groups like PETA.
The percentage of vegetarians in the U.S. in 2000 was "2.5% of the U.S. population (4.8 million people) consistently followed a vegetarian diet and affirmed that they never ate meat, fish, poultry" ("Positions of the American" 63). The number keeps growing slightly higher, with the majority of vegetarians being women.
The vegetarian diet
To go vegetarian, there is a Vegetarian Diet Pyramid that can be utilized to plan for a healthy diet. As explained "The vegetarian pyramid outlines the food groups and food choices that, if eaten in the right quantities for the foundation of a healthy vegetarian diet" ("Vegetarian Diet"). This supports the idea that a variety of foods can provide the needed nutrients a body needs without having to eat meat. There are 8 nutrients that a vegetarian needs to consider and include: Calcium, Iodine, Iron, Omega-3 fatty acids, Protein, Vitamin B-12, Vitamin D, and Zinc.

Why a vegetarian diet is good for you

Eating a healthy vegetarian diet can promote a lower BMI, there is an increase of fiber, which leads to "increased satiety (leading to appetite depression) and decreased between-meal snaking" (Young et al. 102). This shows that consuming a fresh, meatless diet, high in fiber and complex carbohydrates can help you by making you feel full so you won't eat as much, and by raising your metabolism, which helps you burn more calories.
Kids are healthier as well
Kids consuming a vegetarian diet, containing the required calories and nutritional needs can grow up healthier. It can impact the rest of their lives as "from 1980 to 1990, the prevalence of obesity in non-vegetarian children and adolecents doubled" (Tunick 29). Kids who become vegetarians can grow up healthier and normally if they eat balanced meals containing enough proteins. There are a variety of foods that can provide the protein in a meatless diet, as explained "Not only do plants provide all the needed amino acids (the building blocks of proteins), but they provide a balanced amount of protein-more than enough to maintain good health" (Tunick 29). Making the decision to become vegetarian as kids is possible and better for them, knowing what food provide the needed proteins and adding them into everyday meals can insure their proper development.
