To change the way we talk about beauty on social media

Storified by alioliveira · Tue, Mar 24 2015 22:21:39

1. Dove and Twitter have started a campaign against the negativity towards body image and beauty on social media. The goal is to encourage women to talk about things they appreciate in themselves and others and it was based around the statistic that women posted more than 5 million negative tweets about beauty and body image (about themselves and others) last year.
2. The campaign was launched with a video posted online that aired during the red-carpet cover of the Oscars. Despite initiating it with the video, the campaign's mechanism is heavily focused on tweets. The hashtag is being used by thousands of women who are tweeting things they love about themselves and others.
Dove+Twitter: #SpeakBeautiful · doveunitedstates
The fact that the campaign started during the Oscars is not a coincidence either. Dove released statistics of how much Twitter is used negatively during the awards.
3. Besides encouraging the new trend with the use of the hashtag #SpeakBeautiful, Dove also uses a special technology so that when a negative tweet is posted, the technology will be used by Dove to send non-automated responses to real women, which include constructive and accessible advice to encourage more positive online language and habits. These responses are sent by self-esteem experts that are collaborating with Dove and Twitter.
The Discourse Community uses pictures, inspirational quotes and many other assets in order to encourage themselves and other women as their participatory method.
"Don't let media nor society shape you into something you don't want to be. Stay true to you." -Ti #SpeakBeautiful http://t.co/rJp4dP3Eef · Weible Hall
"@LaurenCimorelli: I love the natural curls in my hair! #SpeakBeautiful to inspire others to feel beautiful! http://t.co/H2ojJjMe2f" · THANK YOU KATH♡✿ 2/7
4. Despite using tweets as its primary genre, Dove has issued videos, infograhic posters and even street ads to spread the campaign. On its website, Dove also states their mission and research on the matter. The material is constantly shared by the Discourse Community in their tweets.
"One positive tweet can ignite a positive trend" @Dove & @Twitter #speakbeautiful #sxsw http://t.co/kN5F7eSz1i · Tim Perzyk
The DC also makes use of other social media like Instagram and YouTube to talk about the campaign and spread the positivity on beauty.

Self Hate and Selfie Love #SpeakBeautiful with Sarah Rae Vargas! · kendallsplace
5. Besides the hashtag #SpeakBeautiful that is used by the members of the DC, common vocabulary includes words like true beauty, self love, positivity, be yourself and self confidence. The campaign is all about encouragement but it is also a fight against degrading words and thoughts through social media, which has been one of the most influencing tools of the current generation.

The Best Options for Treating Your Acne Scars

Finding the right acne scar treatment can take some time and patience, as not everyone responds to the same methods. The right treatment for you will

Storified by grumpygian710 · Tue, Mar 24 2015 22:21:45

Finding the right acne scar treatment can take some time and patience, as not everyone responds to the same methods. The right treatment for you will depend on what type of scars you have - as there are different types - and how serious your scarring is. Before you go forward with the treatment option you believe will be effective, have a talk with a dermatologist to see if they concur with your choice, or what other options they may recommend. This is especially important if your scarring is severe. The most effective treatment techniques available today for acne scarring will be the main point of this article.

Lasers have entered the field of treatment options for acne scarring. Different laser treatments exist, of course, but one of the treatment methods that is very effective uses a Fractional CO2 laser. This is a new type of laser that is able to avoid impacting the area surrounding the acne scars that are being treated. This promotes faster healing, and prevents any damage to other areas. This Fractional CO2 laser treatment has enabled a lot of acne scar sufferers to see positive benefits after their first treatment. There are, however, drawbacks. Two downsides are the cost, which is usually expensive, and the recovery which is usually a few days. Even so, the results are usually immediate and last for many months.

A lot of folks resort to makeup to hide their acne scarring. Makeup is a good choice for those who need a temporary cover-up for their acne scars, even though the makeup must be put on every day. If you are searching for a more permanent solution, makeup will suffice for the moment. While some scars are resistant to just about any type of treatment, most acne scarring will respond to treatment and be completely removed or at least reduced.

Some folks with severe acne scars can't afford to have them surgically removed at this time and, unfortunately, their scarring is such that it doesn't go away using home remedies. One option for people who must wait for surgical treatment is to temporarily use a high-quality makeup for coverup. If you opt to use a makeup on your acne scars, consider mineral makeup. It has a very natural appearance and is very gentle to your skin.

Many products advertise on the internet that claim to be able to get rid of your scars and clear up any active acne you may be experiencing. There are quite a few of these products, so it would be impossible to generalize about how good they are There are products available, nonetheless, that do help eliminate previous scarring and clear up severe active outbreaks of acne. Have you read about a product that you think might work for your acne? If so, try to find some reviews that are actually written by folks who have used it successfully in the past. Is it easy to identify who wrote the review? Do they sound honest and do they have a good reputation? It's possible to get credible data about most anything on the internet. You just must be committed to doing the research. There are a lot of different options for acne scar treatments. Before you decide which one to use, be certain to have looked into all the different possibilities open to you. To get the best advice on which treatment method is best for you, it only makes sense to make an appointment with a dermatologist. Regardless of the severity of your acne, keep your hopes high because, undoubtedly, there is a solution just waiting to be found.

Far Cry 4 Review (Xbox One)

In a Kyrat, Far Far Away.

Storified by Luke · Tue, Mar 24 2015 22:21:55

Vaas Montengero from Far Cry 3 is still one of my favourite characters in a long, long time. The writing for his character mixed with Michael Mando's incredible voice work produced one of the most memorable villains in recent years, and that Insanity monologue is one of the most spill-chilling moments I've seen, but then the rest of the story sucked. So anyway, Far Cry 4?
Far Cry 4 sees players take over the shoes of Ajay Ghale, who comes to Kyrat to scatter his mother's ashes, only problem is that Kyrat is in the middle of a civil war between oppressive dictator Pagan Min and the Golden Path, founded by Ajay's father, Mohan. Very soon, Ajay finds himself joining the Golden Path to help bring down Pagan Min.
One thing I've never truly understood is how Far Cry's writers can create such interesting and unique antagonists, but never really produce a compelling story in which you chase said interesting and unique antagonist. Far Cry 2's The Jackal was a pretty damn interesting character, Vaas of Far Cry 3, as I've said was one of the most memorable villains in recent history, then you kill him and the rest of the story blows chunks. Except that poker scene in the final mission, that was pretty cool I guess. Far Cry 4 has the exact same problem, you're first encounter presents Pagan Min as somewhat friendly man, punishing and even killing several of his own men who shot at you in the opening. He invites you to dinner, but you promtly escape his fortress and meet with the Golden Path.
The story is pretty damn boring other wise though, for no apparent reason. Despite only being in Kyrat to scatter his mother ashes and despite pretty much zero encouragement, Ajay happily takes up guns and joins the Golden Path and gleefully killing Pagan Min's army. Like seriously, there's almost no explanation,, justification or really any reason why Ajay so happily joins The Golden Path, the only motivation for joining is "Oh, you're father founded the Golden Path." Ajay's response is pretty much, "Where do I sign up?"
Dull story aside, like many Ubisoft open world games, there's towers to climb that expose the area and the activities and missions in the area, and outposts that present fast travel locations once taken. In fact, the best way to really describe it is Far Cry 3 with a new setting and characters, at this point I could happily quote Vaas' Insanity monologue from FC3 but if you haven't seen it, you should really look it up. Anyway, Far Cry 4 even plays very similar to its predecessor. Usually I'd complain about this but I'm willing to give FC4 a pass... this time considering Far Cry 3's gameplay is pretty solid, although the stealth gameplay feels a lot tougher than FC3. But If Far Cry 5 happens. Wait who am I kidding? It'll probably happen. Anyway, if FC5 handles and plays almost exactly the same as FC3 then I'm gonna have a problem.
Side content wise, it's largely the same as well. The hunting stuff is just a cheap time waste that leaves you with pretty much zero reason to interact with animals once you've crafted everything. So then animals are just present to be the fucking bastards they are and attack you at the most worst times possible. Especially those fucking eagles. FUCK EAGLES.
The driving at least is somewhat enjoyable, maybe that's just me but I really enjoy driving from a first person view, it did take me a while to adjust to the new halo style driving scheme with the triggers being used to aim and shoot from your vehicle, on top of that you can jump from car to car to perform takedowns while shooting is complimented by auto aim and the fact that one of the weapons you can use to shoot while driving is that old shotgun Arnie has in Terminator 2, hell you even spin the thing around to pump it so it's perfect for my planned Terminator 2 video-game movie remake I've been planning for like a week after I discovered that weapon to begin with.
The other nice design choice with driving is the auto-drive feature, I just click the left stick and the game will take control and automatically drive me to my waypoint following the roads. It's the small things that matter.
As for Multiplayer? I can't really comment, despite my frequent attempts I couldn't actually find a game so I won't say anything on that, although I'd assume that since FC4 is basically FC3 the multiplayer can't be much different either. On the other hand, the map editor is still pretty neat. While I don't really have the dedication or attention span to actually use the thing properly, I did get a kick out of stacking bears on top of each other and gleefully watching them fall to their death.
BearValanche - Far Cry 4 - Things to do in · ahcommunityvids
So all in all, Far Cry 4 is an enjoyable experience let down by pretty much everything Far Cry has always fallen short on. Dull, boring story, mission waypoints always being really far away from the start of the mission. The only new let down for this one is the significantl harder stealth, in which every soldier at the outposts seems to have some sort of psychic connection and can instantly sense when one of their soldiers has been killed, or if they have even briefly spotted you for less than a second. So basically, you have to actually do that thing in stealth where you're seen by your targets, which is near impossible for an impatient idiot like myself. So I don't know wherever it's a bad thing or a good thing but it annoyed me a lot. Take that how ever you want it, I just suck at stealth in Far Cry 4, as opposed to FC3 where I could usually take an outpost with little to no alerts.
So Far Cry 4 is a solid enjoyable title with the usual shortcomings, but I'd recommend it to any previous fans of the franchise and if you're on the fence? There's a somewhat enjoyable single player exeperience that took me over 24 hours to complete, and I barely did much of the side content aside from the towers and outposts. Either way, I'm still holding out for a Blood Dragon 2.

Thoughts on the Battlefield: Hardline Beta (Xbox One)

WOOP WOOP! DATS DA SOUND OF DA GUY WHO THINKS HE IS GOOD AT WRITING AND STUFF.

Storified by Luke · Tue, Mar 24 2015 22:22:08

Battlefield: Hardline has been firmly on my radar even since it's leak announcement last year. I've always been more of a Battlefield guy to a Call of Duty guy so naturally I'm interested. What really grabbed me about Hardline though is the Cops and Robbers theme. Not in the sense that it's a total change of scenery for the franchise, but more that I've been longing for multiplayer shooters of such themes. GTA IV's Cops and Robbers mode was kinda fun but not quite what I wanted. So is Hardline that Cops and Robbers game I've been wanting for so long?
Hardline's beta wraps up soon and I've been playing the hell out of it, the beta comes with three modes. Heist, exactly what the title suggests. The criminals have to steal two bags and take them to escape points while the police have to protect them/prevent the criminals escaping with them. Hotwire is a twist on Battlefield's long standing Conquest mode. Replace the capture flags with vehicles that have to keep moving to score is the way it works. There's also conquest but I've barely played that mode.
Heist can be a interesting mode, although it only features one map in the beta. It's still a fun one, the criminals have to break in to the vault of a bank, either by drilling the door open or blasting through a connecting wall or even a rooftop. Multiple points of entry mean the criminals ARE going to get in to the vault at some point and the debris of the roof entry means it's tougher for the cops to defend the bags. On top of that, you can get some pretty intense gunfights inside the bank or across the streets depending on how the game plays out, but when you get those kinds of intense gunfights. That's when this mode is at it's best.
Hotwire is the real surprise mode here, as I described it. It's a twist on Conquest, instead of flags to capture, both teams compete to control capture vehicles. The smart design in this mode though is how the vehicles have to be moving at all times to drain tickets. The result? You get a fast paced, chaotic mode full of car chases and drive-bys that has proved to be the most fun I've had in the beta so far. You can spawn in any vehicle currently controller by your team meaning you can jump straight back in to the action at any time so it never feels boring, regardless of if your racing around the streets of the "Downtown" map or trailblazing around "Dustbowl." This is without a doubt the strongest and most entertaining mode in the beta.
Gameplay wise, it's pretty much the same as Battlefield has played, squads, gunplay, movement ETC. Hardline shakes up the equipment players have at their disposal, firstly. Both sides have different weapons. Firstly, the player classes are now "Operator, Mechanic, Enforcer and Professional." They're pretty similar to their BF4 counterparts, the Operator is the assault, jack of all trades type, uses assault rifles and such. Mechanic is the engineer. Can repair vehicles and has a wide range of explosive weapons to destroy vehicles. They use SMGs mostly. Operator is fairly different to Support classes though, while he can still provide allies with ammo, they use either shotguns or battle rifles, I.E long distance rifles. Professionals are the scumbag scout class, they have snipers or semi-auto rifles on top of tripwire mines and mobile respawn points.
Equipment wise though, it's a far cry from what we've seen in previous, Military focused Battlefield games. For example, most weapons for classes are all Military grade weapons, LMGs and RPGs are no longer weapons you can spawn with. Instead players can find them scattered across the maps and in Heist and Hotwire there's no sign of cars with mounted weapons, tanks or the such. (I believe those vehicles are found in Conquest though.) Choppers are still present, though it's the type with mounted weapons on the side which usually renders them useless because most pilots are too dumb to realise they should be trying to give their gunmen a good angle to shoot at targets so that one goes out the window really. Back on topic, the lack of military grade equipment and vehicles is refreshing though, it really helps remind you of how Hardline is a totally different experience to previous games in the franchise.
There's also a few new toys at player's disposals as well. Firstly, melee has a huge range of weapons now, police have battons, breaching hammers and the like while criminals bring baseball bats, crowbars and sledgehammers among others to the fight. Along side that, there's the grappling hook and zipline presenting new ways to move around the map. The grappling hook saves you running up stairs by presenting a rope that lets you scale the side of a building to reach the roof, while ziplines are crossbows that create, well ziplines providing a quick, kind of safe way to reach the ground depending on where your landing.
Hardline's multiplayer is a complete change to the usual Battlefield affair, my only real complaint is that the teamwork elements seem largely missing. I.E players actually working as a team in a way other than shooting the same guys, but it's a small price to pay because my time with Hardline's beta has been incredibly fun. I can happily say this game is one I'll be picking up this year. Let's just hope the servers aren't fucked/game is extremely buggy on launch like previous BF launches because Hardline has a lot of potential.

Metro 2033 Redux Review (Xbox One)

The funny thing is this still doesn't seem worse than usual public transport

Storified by Luke · Tue, Mar 24 2015 22:22:22

Metro 2033 is a game I've been putting off playing for way too long. I got it on the PC when THQ were so desperate as to give it away for free, I bought it on the 360 a long time ago and barely played it, the redux has been sitting on my X1 hard drive for a very long time. So finally a few days ago I sat down and decided to give it a serious go.
Metro 2033 is set in... well the year 2033. Russia was destroyed by a nuclear attack some 20 or so years ago and the last remaining humans have since settled down and made a living in the tunnels of Russia's metro system. Stations have become towns and outposts and tunnels are the roads to different locations, that or risk walking the surface.
The story follows a man named Artyom who is told by a ranger named Hunter that creatures known as "The Dark Ones" threaten his home station and tells Artyom that if he doesn't return, Artyom must venture to Polis and present Hunter's dog tags to the other rangers. Of course, Hunter doesn't return and the adventure begins.
Metro 2033 isn't your average first person shooter. it's a slower, tough and fairly unforgiving game. Intense gunfights are backed up by a continious sense of desperation as you just hope you can find the supplies neccesary just to survive the next encounter, wherever it's mutants or humans. It's hard to decide which of the two is worse because they'll both kill you without a second thought if you slip up for a second.
If there's one thing that I really like about Metro 2033, it's that the game truly understands the meaning of Survival Horror. Most games that brand themselves as Survival Horror or just let alone horror are the type of games that just give you tons of weapons, plenty of ammunition and then let you slaughter countless enemies without even considering the idea that maybe you might run out of ammo. Metro 2033 takes the complete opposite route, you can still face a fair amount of enemies in single encounters, but you'll barely have enough ammo to make it through that fight let alone what lurks around the next corner. That's what makes this game so good. It gets that horror is more than just scary monsters and dark rooms. It's about making the monsters a threat to you, and making you feel like you can just barely handle one on its own, let alone a group of them. It's what makes the heart beat faster. It's what makes a horror game.
On top of that is the lack of truly safe areas, the few outposts you'll pass through in the story, the areas where you can trade military grade bullets (I.E currency in this game) means that you really have to explore every inch and gather as much as possible, at the same time you need to make sure you have the right amount of equipment when leaving an outpost because you'll have no idea when you actually reach another one. There are spread across the story perfectly, because after the hours you spend fighting through tunnels or on the surface, actually reaching one feels like such a relief.
The gameplay itself fits the general tone of the game, you don't run by default, you walk. Then you click the left stick to run. This isn't your average run and gun title, gunfights are tight and small time, I think the most people I've fought at once was maybe 4 or 5? If this were your average shooter then you'd drop that many with no problem. In Metro? You're in serious trouble right now. Metro also features somewhat capable stealth mechanics, from what I understand they modifed 2033's original controls and added a feature from Last Light which allows the players to perform stealth takedowns from behind, kill or knock them out? Either way they won't bother you again. Add on top of that the standard FPS stealth controls, crouch to move silently and silenced weapons are your best friend in these encounters.
The story itself is somewhat interesting. My main problem is that it only feels like the story progresses during your time in outposts or safe areas. When your just moving through tunnels and across the surface not much storytelling happens. Oh and remember how I just spent two paragraphs talking about how this game is a great example of survival horror? It still does, don't worry. Except it kinda lets itself down during the final stretch when the game throws the often extremely rare currency out the window and allows you to pick from a huge range of the game's strongest weapons and gives you all the ammunition you need before sending you off on a generic action game shooty section in which you your ragtag group gleefully blast large amounts of monsters in the tunnels. After the slow, more challenging early sections the final stretch just ends up feeling out of place and confusing.
My other complaints about the story are kind of minor I guess. The game uses the old trope of "STAND HERE AND KILL STUFF FOR A WHILE AND SURVIVE" mechanic a little too often for my taste, as well as those action-heavy final sections use the frustrating Call of Duty style "YOU CAN'T OPEN THIS DOOR, WAIT FOR AN NPC TO COME AND OPEN IT BECAUSE YOU CAN'T DO IT FOR REASONS" mechanic that is frustrating and somewhat condescending to no end, hell it starts to feel like that use this mechanic so much to try and add some extra time to the final hours. It just comes off tedious along side the fact that the final hours throw out everything you've learned and practised during the story in favour of shooting everything that moves.
Despite my boredom with the final few hours, I still really enjoyed my time with Metro 2033, it actually managed to drag emotion out of me which is a rarity in gaming. I connected with my player, I hated fighting through the tunnels not because I disliked the gunplay (which I did like) but because I didn't want to fight, and if I had to fight, I didn't want to be wasting my resources. My shots were measured, I wanted to get through these encounters using as few bullets as possible. Hell I'd have fired no bullets and just made a run if possible. It's that kind of desperation to survive that just isn't all that common in horror games anymore and I loved it. I hate myself for putting off this game for so long because it's a fantastic title. At least I also have Last Light Redux to play next.

Storified by Luke · Tue, Mar 24 2015 22:22:41

Hey remember that Resident Evil game that was at first a 3DS exclusive? Then they ported it to last gen consoles? Now they've made a sequel to the intially 3DS exclusive but on current gen consoles.
Revelations 2 is set between Resident Evil 5 and 6 and split in to two storylines. In one story, Claire Redfield returns as a playable character now a part of "TerraSave" which is like the BSAA but they don't shoot stuff and are more like a charity/support organisation thing. I don't know. Anyway, while attending she's attending a TerraSave party with Moira Burton (A.K.A Barry fucking Burton's daughter) they are suddenly attacked and kidnapped by a mysterious group. She wakes up in a abandoned prison on an island and tries to find a way out accompanied by Moira. On the other side of the story, Barry fucking Burton arrives at the island to find his daughter, as he arrives he finds a young girl named Natalia and they search the Island for Moira together.
The setting is your usual Resident Evil type, an abandoned location where everything is brown, rusted and decaying. The game is split in to Episodes, so you can buy them individually or just buy a season pass for the whole thing. The episodes were released weekly which makes me wonder why they didn't just release the whole damn thing at once since they must have already been finished when the first episode was released. Anywho, each episode is split in to two parts, Claire and Moira are one half, then Barry and Natalia are the other half. Claire/Moira's side is usually played first, then in most cases Barry/Natalia's story mostly goes through the same area with minor details from Claire/Moira's chapter sticking around in Barry/Natalia's chapter. In all honestly, it's mostly pretty minor stuff though.
The main change in Revelations 2 is how the co-operative play works. I've never been a fan of co-op since it's introduction in RE5 because it never really added anything. It's just another shooty person who needs to be saved every so often so Revelation 2's spin on it is fairly interesting. Claire and Barry are still you standard shooty person while Moira and Natalia play support roles. This time around though, you can freely switch between characters mid-gameplay. Moira has some thing about guns and won't use them, so instead she uses a flashlight which she can stun enemies with and can also find hidden items that Claire can't see and smacks stuff with a crowbar. Natalia on the other hand can sense the presence of nearby monsters as well as spotting weak spots on certain enemy types to help Barry dispatch them more easily.
It's nice to see the co-op become something more meaningful, but ultimately it becomes a tedious exercise swapping between them, espically in Barry/Natalia chapters because you just swap to Natalia for a couple of seconds, find the weak spot and swap back to Barry to shoot it. There are scenes in which the characters are split up, at the very least don't require you to multi-task so they can be done quickly, but they're your standard co-op design. I can't open the door from here so I need to send the other character to the button so it opens. It's so meaningless and serves only to waste time. Espically in Barry/Natalia episode 3 chapter in which the majority of the level is Barry waiting for Natalia to open doors so Barry can move forwards and occasionally shoot stuff along the way.
The story isn't anything too special either, while the new type of virus is a fairly interesting concept not much is really done with. Basically, when Claire and Moira wake up they have these coloured bracelets on them. They've been infected with the new virus, but the twist is that it dosen't activate until the person becomes overrun with fear. The concept is great but it's relegated to a minor storyline thing rather than being actually used in gameplay. It seemed like a missed opportunity really, they could have done some sort of Amnesia type thing of the players coming closer and closer to activating the virus under stress and pressure but nope, nothing.
Barry/Natalia story isn't much better either, during the progression of their story, not once is it ever even questioned as to why Natalia can sense the presence of monsters. NOT ONCE. It seemed like a huge deal but Barry never really asks a question about it ever. All the characters are pretty bland as well, there's no real sign of progression in any of the characters and Moira is just a tedious and annoying attempt to be edgy. She swears a lot! SO EDGY! In reality, you just get a whiny character that sounds like a kid who has just discovered the concept of swearing so she's using curse words in practically every sentence which just leads to constantly goofy and idiotic dialogue.
Gameplay wise, the game largely handles like RE6. The tank controls are still gone and players can move and shoot at the same time and perform evasion moves to avoid incoming attacks. A new crafting system is introduced as well, along the way you can find items that can be combined together, such as throwable bottles of varying types as well as medical items that assist players. If the player takes a heavy hit they might start bleeding which will cause health to gradually decrease until the player fixes it or there's an enemy that's basically a boomer from L4D. If you're close to it when you kill one they cover the screen in gunk that you need to wipe away. It's also worth noting that the support characters regenerate health naturally so you don't need to worry to much about them, even though they seem to have a habit of trying to hug monsters when you're not controlling them.
This is why Raid Mode works though, Raid Mode is similar to The Mercenaries mode from other titles, but instead of survival and scoring it features missions that involve defeating a set amount of enemies or defending something with limited supplies, the smoother gunplay works with this action focused mode. I'd rather have a slow methodical campaign and then put all the fast-paced action in to raid mode but hey what do I know?
My biggest problem with Revelations 2 is that it seems to be suffering from an identity crisis. On one hand, it's trying to be old-school Resident Evil. Tight, claustrophic corridors and limited ammo on high difficulties, but it just can't give up on more action heavy scenes. This lead to quite a few situtations in which the game became frustrating instead of challenging. One boss fight saw me face off with a bullet-sponge boss that never showed any signs of damage until he died while continually throwing small enemies at me as well. The result? Endless frustration, eventually I got lucky and took the thing out, but it wasn't fun at all.
What dosen't help the game's lackluster campaign which is basically another case of "OH NO, THERE'S A VIRUS HERE AND LOADS OF PEOPLE HAVE TURNED IN TO MONSTERS, BUT WHAT HAPPENED?" with a general lack of Revelations ironically. It gets worse when you have to deal with the dull and uninspired puzzles. One of the worst examples is in the Barry/Natalia story, which was just literally moving a box to a bunch of different places. What made it worse was how carrying the box limited Barry's movement despite the fact the Natalia could also carry it and move at the same pace. All the puzzles took me seconds to figure out, but felt like long, tedious hours to complete them.
On the other hand, graphically the game looked pretty damn good and the pre-rendered CG scenes also looked fantastic, and it runs at 60fps which is always a plus. I'll say this forever. I'D RATHER HAVE 60 FPS OVER 1080P GRAPHICS.
What makes me really sad about all this is that after playing the 2015 HDmake (HDmake is not a typo) of the 2002 Gamecube remake of the 1997 original Resident Evil is that I thought that one was so god damn good. The gameplay, the level design, everything. I loved it, and nowadays RE has become this bland, generic action horror game that every so often shows hints of old-school RE but then completley betrays them only a few minutes later. It's sad, cause I want to like Resident Evil. I really do, but it needs to find which side of the line it wants to be on. They've tried to walk it carefully ever since RE5 but it's never truly worked. From a personal standpoint? I want old RE. It was challenging, nerve-racking and so god damn good. I want that, not the action heavy RE games we get now.

Sony's Decision to Pull "The Interview" From Theaters Led to Pandemonium in the Twittersphere and an eventual 180 by the major film studio – a valuable lesson in audience engagement.

Sony's decision to pull the "The Interview" from theaters after threats from North Korea (as well as Sony's preceding email hacking scandal) was met with swift and largely negative reactions across the country and beyond.
According to CNN, the hackers' demands of Sony included the following: "Now we want you never let the movie released, distributed or leaked in any form of, for instance, DVD or piracy. And we want everything related to the movie, including its trailers, as well as its full version down from any website hosting them immediately."
Trailers for the film were pulled just three weeks into broadscale marketing.
Celebrities were quick to weigh in with overwhelming support for the film's release, often citing unyielding dedication to freedom of speech.
King had a bit of a premonition about the online future of the film as well.
Even President Obama was forced to comment on the situation.
Obama says Sony made a mistake cancelling #TheInterview after #SonyHack http://t.co/laEiQMOK2b http://t.co/8AfxOn4Kr0 · BBC Breaking News
The general public had plenty to say as well after "The Interview" went online via stream and pay sites like Google Play, YouTube, Microsoft XBox Video, and Sony's SeeTheInterview.com. It was the first film to cost over $40 million in production to be released online.
Many who supported what the film represented were not as enamored with the film itself, however – but it was the thought that counted!

Continuing the tale of digital humanities and sentiment analysis

Storified by Eileen Clancy · Wed, Mar 25 2015 22:58:19

See Fabula of Syuzhet, the first of this Storify series, to read about the origins of this discussion.
Timeline of further Syuzhet discussion
March 24 Jockers offers a further response to Swafford, A Ringing Endorsement of Smoothing.
Distant reading to discern patterns in enormous numbers of texts using computers has been lampooned inside and outside academia. But digital humanists continue to forge experiments to limn huge bodies of texts as data and to publish their results.
In February 2015, Matthew Jockers, Associate Professor of English at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln and Director of the Nebraska Literary Lab, announced Syuzhet, his new software package for the sentiment analysis of literary texts. Its appearance was noted in the academic community, among data scientists and commercial practitioners of sentiment analysis and in the news media, In March, Annie Swafford, Assistant Professor for Interdisciplinary and Digital Teaching and Scholarship at the State University of New York, New Paltz published a critique of the Syuzhet package. Swafford's critique touched off a far-ranging discussion across academic disciplines of the value of text mining tools for literary research. This, and the earlier Storify in the series, attempts to gather representative elements from the discussion.
(Selected tweets in roughly chronological order; some grouped for clarity. Still being updated as discussion continues.)

Jockers publishes a blog post going toe to toe with Swafford's critique, explaining that Syuzhet is not designed to provide a perfect mapping of emotional valence. He promises another post to identify an “ideal” number of components for the low pass filter.
A new Storify appears on the scene in which Heather Froehlich, a corpus linguistics PhD student at the University of Strathclyde, voices her concerns about the lack of understanding of lexical ambiguity within computational approaches to literary scholarship.
Programmer and mathematician Daniel Lepage takes Jockers to task about his method of “smoothing.”
