Independence

Storified by Shiyi Chua · Wed, Dec 05 2012 00:47:23

In this modern era, people always love to rely on things. Not only things, but also rely on other people too. For example, people always rely on those electronic products such as laptop, smartphone and they started not to solve their problems by themselves. People must not rely on anyone and must learn how to face the outside world. Being independence teaches us a lot, such as finish works without any support from others. Independence is when you do not need as much help from others. There are many advantages from being independent and one of the advantage is we can have more privacy time. Although some people enjoy being relied on one another but actually people enjoy more freedom in this world. For some youngsters, they rely on their parents for a longtime, so the youngsters are now less capable of facing challenges. Hence, here is a few ways to become an independent person.

First, people need to learn as many as possible to increase their general knowledge by reading some educational book or motivation book. It is the most effective way to become an independent person. If people can learn more things, they will gain more knowledge and can rely on ourselves but not someone else. Besides that, they also can become the tutor that teaches other people how to become independent. For example, the reason why people will get used to rely on someone else or some electronic products are because their general knowledge is not enough, so they will try to rely on someone to complementary their deficiency. It is truly a bad habit since there is no one that will help each other all the lifetime but only we can help ourselves. So we must try to gain as many as possible of knowledge to increase our general knowledge by reading book.

Thus, try to accept and believe in yourself. People cannot be independent if they do not accept and believe in themselves. It is an issue that related to self-confidence.  We can watch some inspirational books or listen to inspirational songs to inspirational us to be more independent. People cannot build a strong and independent person if they did not trust themselves. Accept what you have right now, such as your body, characteristics, opinion, choices, and family background. Put behind the entire mistake and learn from them. We are all unique and different. If we do not believe in ourselves, who will? Even though others else do not believe in you, you yourself definitely must believe in yourself. It is the most basic way to become independent. We all not live to please somebody else so try to be yourself. We are all one and only in this world. Therefore, believe in yourself, trust yourself, you can always do the best if you believe that you are the best.

Then, be responsible to your own daily life. People cannot rely on others else by doing all those chores such as cooking and doing laundry. We must learn how to be independent on all these chores especially youngsters nowadays. Youngsters love to rely on their parents or the worker that hired by their parents. This is the main reason why the youngsters nowadays cannot be independent. They love to rely on their parents and not to do any household chores even some own matter such as cleaning their own room, doing their own laundry and many more. It is a terrible problem that faced by many parents. However, many of the parents are trying to solve these problems by playing some education game with them and teaching them to be independent step by step. It is one of the best methods by teaching the children to be more independent by using game. Therefore, the youngsters nowadays must learn how to be responsible to their own daily life.

According to Chua Shi Hui, who had studied in Taylor’s University for two years then moved to the University of the West of England that located at the United Kingdom for one year to study BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance and currently has been staying in Singapore for 3 year to work as internal audit executive said, before she went to the United Kingdom, she is also a child that always relies on parents. All the household chores will be done and prepared by her parents and she had never done it all by herself. But after the study trip to the United Kingdom, she has started to do everything all by herself. She can cook her own meal, she can do her own laundry, and most importantly she is much more independent as compared to previously. Besides that, she also stated that after the valuable experience from the study trip in the United Kingdom, she is now independent enough and that is the reason she has decided to pursue her career in Singapore, a place which is totally foreign to her. As at today, it is already her third year in Singapore and she has no plan to return to Malaysia at least in the short term. She expressed that leaving hometown to further study and work are the most effective way to become independent because once you leave the comfort zone, you will start to realize that many things can be done equally well even with our own hands and without the reliance of both parents.

On the other hand, according to Jin Juan, who come from China that currently study for Foundation in Mass Communication at Taylor’s University Lakeside campus said, she came to Malaysia for one year to study English language and another half year study for Foundation in Mass Communication. She stated that she has been already getting used to the surrounding of Malaysia. It is a great chance for her to become more independent after she come from Malaysia and need to do her own things by herself. Not only household chores and also some finance management and self-management.

For conclusion, in this 20th century, we must really need to learn how to be independent because we are all human-being and we all have the ability to become independent. The responsibility of parents is teaching their children how to be independent when they are kids and not helping them to do all the household chores and choices. As for teenagers, maybe it will take a long time and need to put in more effort to teach them how to be independent, but after they become independent, they will use it for a lifetime. Rome was not built in a day, so no one is completely independent. We can learn it or get used to it step by step. It is not as hard as you imagined if you have perseverance to do it.

Adam Ginsberg’s Tips for Getting Capital for Your Home-Based Business

Storified by · Wed, Dec 05 2012 00:47:34

Giving up a regular 9–5 job with a monthly pay check to start your own business is never easy, especially in current economic conditions. Getting laid off is even worse because it creates more pressure and often manifests negative feelings in your mind.

That being said, the fact that you’ve made up your mind to trade in your blue or white collars for being your own boss is a great positive step in itself. But, running your own business comes with its own set of pressures and concerns that will keep you up at night. The most common and the biggest concern is raising money to fund and run your business. The economy being the shape that it is in makes it even harder to get financed for a new venture, and digging into your savings does not make sense.

Still, there is money out there to be picked. All you need to do is research to get to the right source, negotiate hard and be ready for rejections. If you keep at it long enough and hard enough, you will find it.

Having a detailed and thorough business plan is the first step to realizing your dreams. No investor will put their money in a business that is not well thought out. On the contrary, for an investor to have faith in your business, they need to have faith in you. Your business plan should reflect your passion, your belief in your idea, your knowledge in the area of your business, and your commitment to make it work. So, before you approach a potential source of funding, make sure that you are armed with a rock-solid plan and unshakeable confidence in yourself.

The next step is to identify a potential source where your funding could come from. The possible sources available could be bank loans, loans from friends and family, venture capital, private-equity funds, government programs, angel investors, credit cards, etc. Research your options and zero down on the most suitable option for your business model and requirements. It wouldn’t do any harm to discuss it with someone experienced in the area of business funding.

As exciting as it is, starting a new venture can also cause a lot of stress, and most of it is money related. So, remember to plan it before you start it; that will ease your pressures tremendously and get you on your way to attain your goals of financial growth, having more personal and family time, and maybe a few luxuries along the way.

As soon as you decide to hold your wedding ceremony in an outdoor venue, you must know what components to use. Some of these are Brisbane marquees. The following parts will lead you on using marquees, consisting of tips on making your wedding ceremony memorable.

Conventional canvas marquees are optimal for small functions. Are you considering holding a small garden wedding ceremony? Traditional canvas tents must be good enough for this kind of ceremony. They are versatile compared to other sorts of marquees. You can conveniently put them up if needed and remove them if the weather is excellent. Beware about setting them up if there is rain or way too much wind. They are not water or wind proof. As much as possible, get the feather projection on the day of your wedding. This should make certain your ceremony will proceed as planned.

You need to erect poles to make canvas marquees rise. Make use of tent pegs and guy ropes to plant them securely and straight on the ground. Traditional canvas marquees match a garden wedding ceremony complete with afternoon tea. There is some peaceful about them which can transform your simple wedding into a valuable experience. Put some wrought iron or trailing flowers for a lovely effect. Make use of this if you plan to get married in the course of early autumn, summer or late spring. You visitors can stay both inside and outside the tent.

Framed Marquee

The framed marquee is more expensive than its other counterparts are, but it provides you sophistication, functionality and prestige like no other. It enhances your big days just the right way. These marquees feature strong metal frames alongside structured walls along with hard floor. The construction of the marquee also allows it to supply heating, lighting along with conditioning entirely.

This is suited when hosting big official wedding ceremonies. This will secure your guests if you are considering hosting your ceremony around winter or rainy seasons. It is typically large enough to incorporate other components. Some of the things you can integrate include a dining area, bar area, dance floor and even additional walls. Search for a huge outdoor venue to maximize this kind of marquee.

Indian or Bedouin Tent

The Indian or Bedouin tent is similar to a conventional poled tent. It mainly deals with frames. You can convert it into a canopy or an open pavilion. The interior decor separates the Bedouin tent from the others. You can locate glamorous and exotic kinds. There are also those draped with colourful Indian or Moroccan fabrics.

Matchnama: India v England, 3rd Test - Day 1

Storified by Pitch Invasion · Wed, Dec 05 2012 00:49:46

quick summary of day
MSD won yet another toss and chose to bat first. Now, the English will understand why MSD kept asking for a pitch that turns from day 1 so that the Toss would not be so important. And MSD probably just glanced at Prabir Mukherjee and winked. But Dada stood up to defend his co-Bengali and said a turning wicket will make the toss all the more important because the team that bats fourth will have a nightmare.
Both teams made changes to their team. India dropped Bhajji and picked Ishant. England brought back Ian Bell for Bairstow and also dropped Barbie for Finn. That's the first time since 2008 that Barbie has been dropped.
Two others were dropped and that best news of the day, whether your Indian or English, was that Aleem Dar and Tony Hill were not the umpires who walked-out. Those two had a terrible couple of weeks.
The biggest talking point of this Test has been the pitch. Once play got under way, the assessments began to fly. So what did Prabir da finally produce?
As expected on a good batting track, the Indian openers were making merry. They were going along really nicely. Cook had already set an ultra defensive field for Sehwag. Monty came into bowl after just 7 overs. There was nothing for him in the wicket. Then, just like that England got a wicket or rather India gifted them a wicket, nicely gift wrapped and all. Sehwag was run-out attempting a third run. It was a great top in the boundary by big Samit that set it up.
Che Pu came in and looked fluent from the word go. He looked more and more like VVS when he repeatedly flicked Monty to the boundary. Another 100 was there for the taking but a Monty arm ball did him. Che stayed back, played a lazy defence and let the ball slide through. This, just before lunch, was massive for England.

Riding Bandwith To A Billion Dollars

0

By focusing on the video production end of the business, are companies like Amazon, Apple & Time Warner missing the next billion dollar business?

Storified by Richard Wingard · Thu, Dec 06 2012 14:44:56

Video, compression technology and bandwidth have all received much media attention in 2012 as part of the pending "Spectrum Crunch".  A true story about how bandwidth and outdated technology standards have created a gridlock worse than any found in Washington.  In late September, Deloitte released this great report detailing how real the looming crisis is:

While I had hoped that December headlines would encompass how technology and innovation have solved the spectrum issues, investors and the market seem enthralled with funding what I view as the other end of the video funnel: Distribution.
So let's examine why the money is being spent on this end of the funnel starting with the company Time Warner backed: Maker Studios.

From the Venture Beat article above:
"Maker Studios does online video production that can be found on YouTube. Its video partners have over 80 million subscribers and 1 billion monthly views across more than 1,000 channels, which puts it on par with Google-owned Machinima. Its most popular shows/channels range in topics, and include everything from Epic Rap Battles of History to The Moms View."
While the content they produce may not be my cup of tea, the numbers are solid and attractive to any sane investor.
What about investing in YouTube?

Traffic

Over 800 million unique users visit YouTube each month
Over 4 billion hours of video are watched each month on YouTube72 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute
70% of YouTube traffic comes from outside the US
YouTube is localized in 43 countries and across 60 languages
In 2011, YouTube had more than 1 trillion views or around 140 views for every person on Earth

Social

500 years of YouTube video are watched every day on Facebook
700 YouTube videos are shared on Twitter each minute
100 million people take a social action on YouTube (likes, shares, comments, etc) every week
More than 50% of videos on YouTube have been rated or include comments from the community
Millions of videos are favorited every day
Clicks on the ‘like’ or ‘dislike’ button on YouTube have doubled since the start of 2011. For every ‘dislike,’ we get 10 ‘likes’- people like to tell other people about the stuff they love.(source www.Youtube.com)
Ok, so Youtube is healthy and growing fast, a great platform to bet on as well.

What about Video as a medium and its transmission over broadband?

According to a report released by Cisco, by 2016 the world's 19 billion global network connections will generate 1.3 zettabytes of data. To put this growth in perspective, this represents more traffic than the total amount of data generated between 1984 and 2011, Cisco says in its Visual Networking Index Forecast.

This explosive growth is being driven by a rise in the number of users, an increase in the number of connections per user, faster connections, and--most critically--what users are doing online. Video is taxing the world's fixed-line and wireless broadband networks.

By 2016, the connected world will include 4.5 billion mobile users, up from 3.7 billion in 2011. Residential fixed-line users will total 2.3 billion, up from 1.7 billion last year. The Cisco report predicts steep growth in Internet adoption in South America and Africa, where penetration has been lagging. India is expected to show some of the fastest growth in wireless broadband. The report predicts that in much of the developing world, broadband access will be more ubiquitous than electricity.

I want to repeat that last line as its critical: " broadband access will be more ubiquitous than electricity." If this is the case investing in the transmission of video looks like it is turning out to be a sure bet.

So what have we learned?

1. Time Warner made a $40,000,000 bet on content production.
2. Companies like Maker Studios are joining the other millions of people producing and uploading content every second of every day.
3. YouTube has growth numbers that almost seem make believe.
4. Cisco says that Internet Video produce over a Zettabyte of Data which will wreak havoc on the world's fixed-line and wireless broadband networks.

So what does it all mean?

I have no doubt that the content production business via platforms will return millions of dollars to investors like Time Warner.  For me, the real excitement comes from watching who will break from the herd and unlock significant revenues by addressing the real issue of the spectrum crunch.  Imagine if a company like Time Warner or Amazon put its focus and resources (technical and financial) into solving the bandwidth problem.   Could it lead them to a cool billion?

Can Facebook make money?

Farhad Manjoo of Slate questions the effectiveness Facebook ads prior to the IPO
"...while the S-1 shows that companies are spending lots of money on Facebook ads, it doesn’t give many details about how these ads work for businesses. Wal-Mart launched an ad to promote its Black Friday sales, and, according to the S-1, it reached 60 million Facebook users. But did that push more people to go to Wal-Mart stores? The S-1 doesn’t say. And I’d venture that Wal-Mart doesn’t even know."
Matt Yglesias of Slate calls into question Facebook's corporate structure prior to the IPO
"It’s easy to mock Zuckerberg’s “it’s not about the money” protestations, but they’re actually worth taking seriously. If post-IPO Facebook perennially underperforms the stock market at large, that will be a disaster for shareholders but will still leave Zuckerberg unimaginably rich. He’s already made large charitable contribution, and it’s totally plausible that at this point in his life there are things he cares more about than maximizing his income—power, glory, autonomy, and the esteem of one’s fellow citizens are all perfectly reasonable life goals."
Alexis C. Madrigal of The Atlantic points to the Facebook's natural tech monopoly to make a case for its long-term growth potential after IPO:
"One in every five page views on the Internet is a Facebook page -- and vast portions of the traffic that flows to other sites around the Internet is channeled through Facebook. If you think the Internet is valuable, then you implicitly think Facebook is valuable, too."

Joe Nocera of the New York Times says that the Facebook IPO disaster doesn't tell much about the company's long-term money-making potential:

"The current price is partly a reflection of the I.P.O. maelstrom, and partly a function of short-term problems: The decision by General Motors, revealed just before the I.P.O., to pull its advertising, and its inability, so far, to generate much advertising on mobile platforms.

What it doesn’t reflect is where Facebook will be 5 or 10 years from now."

How Jesus Christ Superstar reverses the common image of one of humanity's greatest villains.

One of the most reviled figures throughout all of history is Judas Iscariot, of Jesus Christ’s twelve apostles that eventually betrayed him, leading to his arrest and eventual crucifixion. The fact that Judas is a “bad guy” is very rarely argued— however, in the film Jesus Christ Superstar, Judas is portrayed as a sympathetic figure and a good friend to Christ. In addition, Judas is also seemingly the narrator of the whole story, leading some people to label this rock opera “the Gospel of Judas.” Biblical Judas and JC Superstar Judas are two very separate people, but the film manages to provide an argument as to why Judas perhaps isn’t the villain humanity has made him out to be.

Judas is arguably the greatest Biblical villain, with the exception of Lucifer himself. As stated in Luke 22:47-48, Judas “kissed the door to heaven; yet went to hell.” Judas is not shown to be close to Jesus; instead, he is greedy and bent on gaining personal profit. Judas never quite believed Jesus to be God, and many Christians are convinced that Judas only wanted to be one of the twelve apostles because he saw an opportunity to profit, a trait shown in his status as treasurer. Further evidence of the distance between Jesus and Judas can be shown the order of the Biblical text itself. In the synoptic gospels of the Bible, the twelve apostles are generally described in a specific order, with Peter, James, and John trading off the top spot. Christians believe that this specified order is based on how close Jesus is with that apostle, and if this is true, then it is very telling that Judas is constantly listed last. In fact, in the gospels, there are only three moments where an actual interaction between Jesus and Judas are recorded; in John 12:1-8, when Judas makes a snide comment towards Mary and Jesus reprimands him, in Matthew 26:25, when Judas denies any knowledge of a betrayal of Jesus, and in Luke 22:48, when Judas comes forth and actually betrays Christ. Judas is in no way shown to be a sympathetic figure in the Biblical text; it is clear that he wronged Christ and did not have the spirit that a true Christian must possess.

However, in Jesus Christ Superstar, Judas is presented in a much different way while still participating in the exact same sequence of events. One of the starkest differences of Judas’ character is that it is clear in the film how much he truly does care about Jesus. Judas does not betray Jesus because of greed, but rather because he honestly believes Jesus has taken things too far. In the lyrics of Judas’ opening song, “Heaven on Their Minds”, this belief is evident; he sings “I remember when this whole thing began/No talk of God then, we called you a man/And believe me, my admiration for you hasn’t died/but every word you say today gets twisted ‘round some other way.” These lyrics illustrate how Judas cares very strongly for Jesus; it also supports the notion that Judas did not see Jesus as divine, but it also discusses the idea that Judas thinks Christ’s message is losing meaning by his claim of divinity. The followers of Christ frighten him, and he is worried that if they find out Jesus is lying about his divine nature that they will turn against him. Biblical Judas’ insane greed is also somewhat disproved in the film; when Caiaphas and Annas hand him a bag of silver in exchange for information about Jesus, Judas throws it at their feet, shouting, “I don’t want your blood money!” This portrayal of Judas is clearly very different from the classic version of him.

I believe that Judas is made to be a sympathetic character because if one looks at the story of the crucifixion from a logical standpoint, it is clear that Jesus had to die in order to save humanity from its sins, and in order for Jesus to die, he had to have been betrayed by Judas. It is clear in the film that Jesus knows that his death is inevitable and must come to pass—he speaks directly to God in the garden of Gethsemane, asking if it is really necessary for him to die. But he realizes that he must, and thus, allows Judas to continue with his betrayal. Judas’ role in the Christ narrative is integral; without the betrayal, there can be no crucifixion and no resurrection.  With this belief, I’m glad that Jesus Christ Superstar chose to portray the “Gospel of Judas” instead of telling the tradition story of Jesus, because once you know that Judas was destined to betray his friend and leader, it becomes interesting and also very sad to watch his struggle with the angst that comes along with the role he must play. In the number “Superstar”, Judas sings, “Did you mean to die like that? Was it a mistake or/Did you know your messy death would be a record breaker?/Don’t you get me wrong/I only want to know.” It is clear that Judas was not aware of the ultimate plan that God and Jesus were enacting, although he was arguably one of the most key players. This knowledge immediately casts a sympathetic light on the character, only exemplified by his rejection of monetary reimbursement and his obvious love for Jesus—not the Son of God, but the mortal man and friend. Jesus Christ Superstar tells the story of Jesus without treating him as a solely divine being, and since Judas Iscariot is the only one of his followers to see him and treat him as a man, it is only natural for the story to come from Judas' point of view... and it is difficult to listen to a story from a man's perspective without eventually identifying with that man.
