BC Clean Geothermal Energy Capacity is Vast

High-temperature hydrothermal energy has been used for electric power generation since 1909, and is presently used in over 20 countries around the world. On the west coast of the US 2800 MW of energy is produced using geothermal plants. British Columbia has enormous geothermal energy resources, just examining the resources we are aware of today their is enough energy to create plants that could supply 2 million households.
Geothermal energy is considered to be one of the cheapest forms of large-scale grid-tied energy. The levelized cost of geothermal energy ranges from 3.3-3.9 US cents per kWh, compared to 5.0-6.4 US cents for wind energy and 7.3-8.7 US cents for biomass (US Department of Energy, Office of Utility Technologies). "Levelised cost" means the average cost of power production over the life of a power plant, taking into account all capital expenses and operating and maintenance costs, plus fuel costs for power plants that rely on external fuel sources. Geothermal plants are very efficient, operating at 95-98% availability on a consistent basis. Thus, geothermal power has a tremendous advantage over most other renewable resources, in that it produces "base load" electricity.

British Columbia's vast geothermal capacity completely untapped!

Climate Investment Fund grant of $9m for geothermal work in Armenia

According to a local news source, the development of geothermal energy in Armenia is a perspective direction, which can give a substantial solution to the energy security issue in Armenia. This is the only technology, which can provide the guaranteed energy production, as the other sources of energy, including solar, wind, and renewable, have a seasonal character.

China Sees Geothermal as Next Source of Energy

The National Energy Administration of China is developing its 13th five-year plan (2016-2020) for the development and use of geothermal resources, in a move to further boost the development of the sector, according to China Securities Journal.

Industry analysts said that the plan is another important step towards nationwide utilization of geothermal resources following the release of guidelines on promoting the development and use of geothermal energy. The plan is an indicator that geothermal energy is being promoted as the next new growth source across China's renewable energy sector following wind and solar.

American Samoa to Go Geothermal

The American Samoa Power Authority has teamed up with Quantec Geoscience to look for a source of geothermal energy beneath certain parts of Tutuila, as confirmed by ASPA CEO Utu Abe Malae in response to Samoa News queries. The hope is that this form of renewable energy will be able to replace diesel fired power plants in the territory. He said that ASPA contracted Quantec Geoscience based out of Toronto, Canada as part of the Geothermal Resource Evaluation Project funded through the Department of Insular Affairs. “They are performing geologic exploration utilizing geophysical methods that save money and impact compared to drilling exploration. The technique is similar to the way a medical doctor uses ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging, but on a much grander scale.”

Powering California with Wind, Water and Sun

A new Stanford study finds that it is technically and economically feasible to convert California's all-purpose energy infrastructure to one powered by clean, renewable energy. Published in Energy, the plan shows the way to a sustainable, inexpensive and reliable energy supply in California that could create tens of thousands of jobs and save billions of dollars in pollution-related health costs.

Moth Eye Technology to Build High Efficiency Solar Cells

Moth eyes absorb almost all incident light, thus reducing reflection that predators would notice. Researchers have now used the moth eye structure as the basis of a highly efficient solar absorbing cell

As US Clean Energy Goes Mainstream, Leadership Is Focused on States and Cities

According to this year’s Index, eleven states generated more than 10 percent of their electricity from clean-energy sources (not including hydro) in 2013, with two, Iowa and South Dakota, exceeding 25 percent. At least eight states now have more than 50 percent smart-meter market penetration, with California topping 70 percent. Registrations for all-electric vehicles, led by the Nissan LEAF and Chevy Volt , more than doubled between the 2013 and 2014 indexes, to nearly 220,000 cumulative registrations nationwide. And 14 states — among them Georgia, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania — are each now home to more than 500 LEED-certified commercial green building projects.

Australian Solar Leasing Market Could Reach $100 Billion

A new Australian start-up solar company believes that the Australian market for rooftop solar leasing for the residential and commercial sectors could reach $100 billion in the next decade.

Kudos Energy was one of three solar companies that were allocated a total of $120 million by the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC) to help kick-start the solar leasing market in Australia.

Dell’s Mobile Solar-Powered Classroom Brings Computers To Areas Without Electricity

Most of the solar-powered schools we’ve encountered have sprouted up in the developed world, driven by a desire for lighter environmental impact, lower electric bills, and additional educational opportunities provided by the technology itself. In the developing world, though, solar power may be the only way to provide educational opportunities that require electricity: political unrest, poverty, and lack of development all keep power grids from expanding into remote areas in many parts of the world. For young people in those places, that means the chance to learn about the latest technologies are limited… if they’re available at all.

California Invests in Electric Buses and No Overhead Wires

Foothill Transit Authority of West Covina, California becomes the first transit system in the country to offer revenue-based service of a Proterra electric bus in the U.S., and now the small city east of L.A. will be the first to get Proterra’s second-generation, 300+ mile electric bus, reports Green Car Congress.

With a 20.8 MPGe, the Proterra electric bus also offers the lowest cost per passenger, which has compelled the Foothill Transit Authority to purchase two of the second-generation buses, which can do about 26 miles of driving per charge, after which a fast charger tops it off. Officially rated at more than 300 miles of driving per charge day, though the first-gen buses could go more than 700 miles per day with enough recharging.

North Carolina has had Big Success in Solar Energy

North Carolina has become one of the hottest states in America for solar power, ranking third in the nation for new photovoltaic installations in fourth quarter 2013 and first quarter 2014. But a regulatory fight pitting solar industry against big utilities is underway, and it could effectively end new utility-scale solar additions.

"I am Hindu and I was taught yoga in school at a young age in India," said Shah, who recently earned his masters' degree from from Rutgers University

Storified by accidental042 · Sun, Jul 27 2014 00:14:00

"I am Hindu and I was taught yoga in school at a young age in India," said Shah, who recently earned his masters' degree from from Rutgers University in global affairs. "I thought, how can I use what I know from my faith and experience to impact the community -- whatever their faith may be?"

"Hindu communities tend to prioritize two ways types of connections: one is local, usually via the temples, and one is back home to India. But there are not as many connections between temples, or between Hindu organizations themselves, or between them and other organizations in America," said Vasudha Narayana, a religious studies professor at the University of Florida who specializes in the Hinduism diaspora.

Vineet Chander, a 33-year-old Hindu chaplain at Princeton University who will be speaking at the Washington, D.C. event, believes getting Hindus involved in community service will also help Americans better understand the religion.

He's one of dozens who will convene in Washington, D.C. this weekend for a national conference at The White House and Georgetown University to talk about a topic of growing concern to a new generation of the nation's 1.2 million Hindu Americans: How can Hindus, a diverse religious group with members that differ vastly in theological beliefs, unite to impact their communities through service?

PASSAIC, N.J. -- In a cluttered fifth grade classroom in this New York suburb, Niki Shah has spent the summer attempting an almost impossible task: teaching yoga to seven-year-olds.

Still nascent in its operation, Bhargava's organization has dispatched several volunteers like Shah to community centers, schools and health fairs around the nation to work with low-income and minority communities. And while almost every member of the organization is Indian and Hindu, the focus is almost exclusively on seva toward non-Hindus.

Prakash represents the kind of demographic the organization is attempting to reach: U.S.-born or U.S.-raised Hindus that may not frequent temples very often, but still want to feel connected to other Hindus.

Calling the effort a "logical step" for the Hindu American community, Joshua DuBois, the pentecostal pastor who is the executive director of the White House Office of Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships, applauded the organization's efforts in an interview.

Each day at an annual free summer camp the city sponsors for children of mostly low-income families, Shah, a 31-year-old AmericaCorps volunteer, interrupts games of basketball and soccer to gather students in a circle around him for breathing exercises, poses such as the "the mountain" (also known as the "downward dog") and silent meditation -- difficult tasks for these first-graders with no shortage of energy or conversation.

While it's not a political group, one of the advantages Hindu American Seva Charities has over other Hindu groups is its connections to the Obama administration's faith-based efforts. For its Washington, D.C. conference, it has assembled a broad array of Hindu American community leaders as well as non-Hindus. They include former Senator Harris Wofford; Shaun Donovan, the U.S. Secretary for Housing and Urban Development; the Rev. Mark Farr, President and CEO of The Faith & Politics Institute; Rabbi David Saperstein of the Union for Reform Judaism's Religious Action Center and several others from Sikh and Muslim communities. President Obama will not be at the event.

"In general, I've never really been a religious person, but I call myself Hindu and am proud of it. I was looking for a way to work with other Hindus, to feel like part of that family, but to help people who weren't just like me," said Supriya Prakash, a junior at George Washington University who has spent her summers traveling to health fairs in Latin American communities in New Jersey to teach wellness classes as part of a Hindu American Seva Charities effort.

Shah, a Hindu American who was born in India and raised in Passaic, considers this his seva. The Sanskrit word, commonly used in Hinduism, loosely translates to "selfless service."

Hindu American Seva Charities is just one of several non-temple based Hindu organizations that have formed in recent years, though it is one of the few focused exclusively on community service and interfaith efforts. Another popular organization, the Hindu American Foundation, has largely focused on civil rights issues and an educational campaign about yoga.

"If there is a lack of information about who Hindus are or what they believe, one way of bridging that gap is to be out there in the wider community. We have to say 'Yes, we have our roots in India but we are here in America," said Chander, who works with about 200 Hindu students at the university on religious, cultural and service-oriented efforts. "We have to engage in America -- not despite our faith roots, but actually with our faith front and center."

The idea of community service may seem intuitive. Christian denominations, for example, have emphasized social service programs in the United States for more than a century. Yet for Hindus, who only began having sizable population in American cities the 1960s and 1970s, experts say the community focus has long been on building temples (there are now 1,600 nationwide), developing careers and educating their children.

"Faith-based organizations are often the groups that are closest to the people. They are going to be the ones who are putting roofs over the heads of the homeless or feeding the hungry or making sure we are helping people prevent foreclosures," said DuBois, who will speak to the organization at The White Hose.

Niki A. Shah teaches Yoga to a group of kids in Passaic, NJ on July 27, 2011. ( Myra Iqbal, AOL )

The event, the first of its kind, is being organized by Hindu American Seva Charities, a two-year-old non-profit that was born out of a "call to service" that President Barack Obama made in 2009.

"But that is what the young generation wants right now. We have lots young or new Hindus who Real Estate Foreclosures Georgetown DC Homes want to embrace their heritage, but may not want to do it via the temple," Narayana added.

"There is a gap in the Hindu American community," said Anju Bhargava, a former member of the President's Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships and the founder of Hindu American Seva Charities. "We're engaged religiously, we're starting to get engaged with civil rights issues, but we're not very engaged in faith-based service," said Bhargava, who by day is a Senior Vice President at Bank of America.

LA CRISIS NO RECORTA SUS PRESUPUESTOS

Storified by Nebrijadeportes · Mon, Jul 28 2014 00:15:11

MADRID,

El AT.

Although lots of people dream of becoming great chefs, all the hard training that is required can be extremely overwhelming. When cooking, it is possible to go step-by-step, and the advice in this article will help you learn to cook like a pro before you know it.

You should try a small portion of the meat you are cooking when seasoning meats. Foods like meatloaf, meatballs, and even hamburgers can require careful seasoning. Never prepare the entire amount immediately after seasoning it. Cook a small piece of meat first. Once you see how it tastes, you can determine to either cook the remaining meat or adjust the amount of seasoning.

Vegetables should be cooked rapidly to obtain peak results. Using slow cooking methods can rob vegetable of their taste and nutritional value. A plus is that faster cooking methods usually yield vegetables which are, generally, simply better for you health. Cook your vegetables for the minimum amount of time for better results.

Steak and poultry seasonings can be added to other types of foods, such as vegetables or eggs. Sprinkle it over popcorn for an evening treat, or add a dash to pasta. Everyone will love the flavor and ask you for your secret ingredient!

They will soak up much of the water, as if they were a sponge. Get a soft, clean and wet cloth to wipe the dirt off each individual mushroom for better results.

The smell of garlic can transfer to your hands easily. A trick for getting rid of the garlic odor on your hands is to rub them on a metal kitchen sink. This will clean your hand and keep the odor from transferring to other foods you are handling.

Figuring out how long meat should be grilled can be tough. Investing in a top-notch meat thermometer, such as an ultra-precise digital one, will let let you make sure that the meat is cooked correctly inside and out. If you are cooking meat thicker than 1.5 inches, close the lid of the grill to help it cook more quickly.

Always make sure to read labels on any ingredients you are purchasing for a recipe. Most cooking supplies have hidden ingredients that could be unhealthy. Look for products with a low level of sodium, fat and sugar to make sure you are cooking a healthy dish.

Don't waste your turkey leftovers after Thanksgiving dinner. Chop or slice the leftover meat, store it in a zippered bag or other airtight container, and stash it in your freezer. The turkey will stay fresh for several weeks, and you can use it for sandwiches or salads.

It is necessary for all cooks to organize their cooking supplies. If you do not organize them, you will be scrambling around to find where you put everything. Group similar items together, and keep them in the same area. As an example, you may want to keep all of your spices together.

The odors of many spices and vegetables will stay on your cutting board and will be impervious to soap. Use indelible ink to mark the cutting board so that you know which side to use for each purpose.

Twice a year, you should buy all new spices. If spices are kept open for too long a time, they will eventually lose their flavor. Share your spices with friends or relatives if you will not use as much as you buy.

Make homemade stock to create tastier dishes. Make a lot at once, so that you can divide it into batches and store it in the freezer. This way you will always have flavorful homemade stock on hand when you want to make soups or other dishes. Homemade soup stock or bullion is a wonderful way to eliminate high sodium and preservatives that are present in commercially made products from your diet.

"Pay as you go" dishwashing is easy to do. This way you avoid ending up with a big pile of dirty dishes to do after the meal. Make sure one side of the sink is filled with soapy hot water while the other side can be used to rinse. Cookware is easier to clean right after it has been used, and it will be ready for another use immediately.

It doesn't matter if you want to cook for fun or as a career; the start of great tasting meals begins with accurate cooking knowledge. In all cultures from around the world, we sit down to meals with friend and family. Use the guidelines suggested in this article to get you started on the path towards cooking perfection.
