Shoes review

Ankle boots
Fundamental essentials standard, stylish low boot, having a leather body, rubber sole and rounded foot. Zipper-front ankle boots tend to be more pointed and formal, but both zipper-front and lace-up ankle boots 310 shoes could be worn under suits running a business configurations, on dates or special occasions.

Cowboy/Biker boots (motorcycle-type boots)

Three key variations set the cowboy boot apart from its cousins: pointed toes, prominent -- even high -- heels, along with a length that stops just lacking the knee.

Unless of course it is a black leather or suede ankle boot, it is advisable to consider all boots casual shoes. Hiking and cowboy/biker boots could be worn with jeans, or perhaps in the situation of biker boots, leather. Since the best boots ought to be some type of leather or suede, stay with exactly the same color rules layed out within the section on dress footwear.

Strategies for purchasing and being careful of shoes:

Boot leather does not really expand. It either fits or it does not. Take time to measure your feet precisely, and please request for help (an additional opinion) from the sales rep.

Make use of a shoehorn to safeguard the boot's heel when sliding it off and on.

Don't put on your boots day in and day trip. Leather soaks up moisture as well as your ft will sweat.

You do not need as numerous footwear as the girlfriend or wife, but it is best to own not only athletic shoes. As long as you have one set of the best dress footwear, casual footwear, sandals, and boots, you will be covered for those situations and armoires.

“Books are a uniquely portable magic.” - Stephen King, On Writing

Storified by Carey Applegate · Mon, Nov 19 2012 07:11:54

I love reading.

This is a little cliche for an English teacher to say, right? Of course you love reading. Otherwise, you wouldn't be teaching English.

... but that's not necessarily a natural connection for me since I've spent most of my reading life pushing back against what other people thought that I should be reading. In high school, I mostly trudged through (or SparkNoted) the classics that my teachers assigned. For example:
I was VERY disappointed that this play didn't involve actual witches.
This wasn't nearly as interesting as Crane's poetry...
Ack. And this one wasn't even interesting in the SparkNotes.
But I did read.

I read, easily, at least five books a week outside of school, and burrowing into bed with whichever pop-fiction paperback had caught my eye in my after-school job at a used bookstore became my nightly ritual. At home, I was reading across genres - my favorites were science fiction, romance, horror, and YA novels, all of which allowed me to think through potential realities and my place in the world in interesting ways.

I adored Stephen King's writing; reading about the apocalyptic world portrayed in The Stand made me think about what life would be like if a plague struck "society today." 1200 pages later, I felt like I had a pretty good idea re: how social groups might splinter and what most people would prioritize, but even after I finished reading the book, I'd find myself thinking about some of the issues it raised.
As I was reading The Stand, I also happened to be taking World History, where we studied the Black Plague. How would it be different from then? I wondered. Would we run to the countryside too? Would we fear our families, our friends?  When the novel was adapted into a television miniseries, I learned that I wasn't alone in asking these kinds of questions. All of a sudden, there were other people talking about how the characters were adapting to their new environments and the ways in which the social world in The Stand was evolving.
The Stand, intro (Don't fear the reaper) · worshipme
On the other side of the pop-fiction spectrum, I was re-reading Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time series; while it was written for children significantly younger than me, I found myself drawn to the characters, to the science, to the faith, and, yes, to the ethics that L'Engle incorporated into the layers of her books. Meg Murray will always be one of my favorite people on the planet, even if it's not MY planet, exactly. Years later, as I read books like Brian Greene's The Hidden Reality: Parallel Universes and the Deep Laws of the Cosmos or Michio Kaku's Physics of the Impossible: A Scientific Exploration into the World of Phasers, Force Fields, Teleportation, and Time Travel, I can still imagine the conversations that Meg, Charles Wallace, and their mother had about tesseracts and how those threads of discussion around what seemed to be an impossibility have shaped my understanding of modern physics.

But A Wrinkle in Time offered more than just physics, more than ethical discussions. It provided a space for reading in which the main character was a girl; not only that, the strongest characters in the book were women. Not like that silly Twilight - or even something more canonical, like The Great Gatsby (in which there were really no positive female characters, not even the yearned-for Daisy). Even today, as I write this, I found myself a little giddy to discover that A Wrinkle in Time has just been adapted into a graphic novel; I'm 35 years old, and all I want to do this Christmas is read this book in front of the fire.
@spartanlynne Just picked up Wrinkle in Time graphic novel today!! #thanksgivingread http://pic.twitter.com/TAK9xNdR · Jessica Walsh
The problem with privileging the classics, from 14-year-old Carey's perspective, was that I felt like the thousands of pages I was reading each week didn't count. They didn't count in academics because not only were they not tested, they also weren't discussed; it was like literature had stopped being produced after 1937. And not only did they not count in the classroom, reading them in isolation made me feel like my pop-fiction texts were a dirty little secret. The message that I consistently received from my advanced and AP English teachers was that my books weren't Literature, that they were somehow lower on the literary hierarchy than the Great Works that we were reading for class, and that good readers valued the classics over everything contemporary.

In the middle of all of this positioning of Great Works as the heart of the English classroom, we were doing Very Important Things with our time in the class itself. Symbolism, plot devices, and figurative language were just the tip of the iceberg. Most of our time was spent trying to figure out what the author was trying to do in his book and how these books were either A) reflecting historical culture or B) shaping us into productive members of society. (Grown-up Carey would like to point out that the gendered pronoun used there re: the author was intentional; in four years, we read ONE book written by a woman and ZERO books written by people of color.) Incorporating critical theory and talking about literature through a variety of lenses was not really an acceptable mode of discussion in my very traditional district.

In retrospect, if we absolutely had to study the classics (and only the classics), I wish that somebody in authority had taken a few minutes to break down how and why we read in the first place and to help us make connections between those ideas and the reading that many of us were doing outside of school. In short, I wish that one of my teachers had been John Green.
How and Why We Read: Crash Course English Literature #1 · crashcourse
But that didn't happen.

What did happen was that I continued to skim my school texts (or, let's be honest, the SparkNotes versions) enough to get a feel for the content. But I rarely made any emotional connections to the books in the way that I connected with The Stand or any of my Madeleine L'Engle books. And since I wasn't engaged with the plots, characters, etc. of the classics that we were drilled on, I sidestepped any driving philosophical questions/social implications that could have been found in the classics. Those books were just part of a checklist of things that I had to do to graduate and move onto the more interesting parts of life. It wasn't until I was in college that I found a space to talk about and analyze the texts that really mattered to me.

20 years later, I wonder what would have happened if I weren't a reader AND a rebel, if I hadn't pushed back enough to prioritize my own reading over the required reading from the school. And I wonder how many of the high-school kids today, sitting in the classics classroom that seems privileged by the Common Core, will ever voluntarily pick up another book after their coursework stops demanding that they read.

"Twilight" fans came out in droves to support the final movie in the series.

Storified by Brittany P · Mon, Nov 19 2012 07:11:58

Breaking Dawn Part 2 จบแล้วตำนานรักแวมไพร์ · LengYi

Eventually, it had to come to an end. The final battles were fought and young girls across America breathed a collective sigh of relief. After nearly a year of waiting, the civil war among “Twilight” fans, pitting Team Edward against Team Jacob, was laid to rest.

Huge crowds packed movie theaters across the country as “Breaking Dawn – Part 2” made its big screen debut. There were late-night showings on Nov. 15, as well as midnight showings on Nov. 16, the film’s official release date.

Movie critics were hard on the other films in Summit Entertainment’s “Twilight Saga,” but the fifth installment was still highly anticipated by many moviegoers.

“I’ve been waiting in line for about an hour to buy tickets and I’m not even one of the hardcore fans.” said Shezeen Rehmani, wearing her “Twilight” T-shirt, at the film’s midnight screening. “There are people here who have been waiting around for hours just for the theater to open.”

The film's extended trailer was first shown at the MTV Video Music Awards in September and fans were waiting ever since.

Throughout the many premieres in countries across the world, the buzz was evident. Fans ranged from screaming preteen girls to female college students to middle-aged women and the occasional, less-enthusiastic guy. Some colleges, such as George Mason University, chose to organize and sponsor shuttles to and from the theater for students on premiere night.

“For me, it’s about the experience, not the movie itself,” said Tavia Adams, a Mason student who took advantage of the university's provided shuttle. “I’ve read all the books. I already know what happens in the storyline. I’m here to see it played out visually and then talk about it with everyone. That’s the best part.”

Many students felt like Adams, in regards to the theatrical experience. The “Twilight” novels were published from 2005 to 2008 and avid fans go to see the movies to enjoy the cross-platform experience.

Similar to other saga-ending films, such as “Harry Potter,” the last novel in the series was broken into two parts to increase suspense and give the fan base a foretaste of the climatic finale.

“I’m sure I’ll see it more than once. I feel like you have to watch it a couple times to catch onto everything that happens,” said Ama Kusi, a self-proclaimed “Twi-Hard,” or diehard Twilight fan. “That probably sounds crazy, but there are a lot of hidden moments that you don’t catch the first time.”

And fans did just that.

“Breaking Dawn – Part 2” reigned triumphant at the weekend box office with more than $140 million, in domestic profits, and $340 million, worldwide. Although it wasn’t the highest number that the franchise has seen, it was still a huge opening weekend. The movie topped other big-name box office draws, such as "Skyfall," starring Daniel Craig, and "Lincoln," starring Daniel Day-Lewis.

While many of the films’ stars saw the ending as bittersweet, other people were happy that “Twilight” had run its course.

“My wife drags me along to these premieres every year around Thanksgiving,” said Joe Fuller, a 25-year-old Chantilly resident, standing in line at Fairfax’s Rave Cinemas surrounded by women waiting for the late-night screening. “I always feel out of place. So, this year, I’m thankful that I never have to go to see ‘Twilight’ again.”

Storified by University of Miami · Mon, Nov 19 2012 07:12:39

Miami officials said Monday that the university is making what it called an "unprecedented decision" to self-impose a postseason ban for the second straight year, ending any chance of the Hurricanes playing in either the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game or a bowl.

For an unprecedented second straight season, the University of Miami will forgo the opportunity of a football postseason in the face of the ongoing NCAA investigation.

Andy Gomez, senior fellow at the Institute for Cuban and Cuban-American Studies at the University of Miami, said the community in South Florida has applauded Obama's easing of family travel and academic exchanges with the island. He doesn't see prospects for improvement much beyond that unless and until the Castros are gone. Even then, Gomez said, it will take years for Cubans to break the state stranglehold on the economy and acquire respect for civil and human rights. "We've learned that we can't export American values and attitudes to countries that don't have the institutions to support them, and Cuba doesn't," Gomez said.

"There are things people do without any evidence, without any support, but which are not illegal — I would put HCG in that category," said Dr. Olveen Carrasquillo, associate professor of medicine and chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of Miami Health System. "For HCG, you have pretty good evidence that it doesn't work. Some states are better at regulating, trying to outlaw this thing, than Florida is. It's much more a state that believes the less regulation, the better."

At both Harvard and the University of Miami, pressure from students and unions prompted both universities to increase the wages of both their direct and contract employees, yet the negotiations were protracted and painful. A decent living wage is not yet in place at both institutions.

In addition, men’s failure to recognize depression in a fellow male may represent a kind of defense mechanism prompted by an “unconscious identification” with that man, says Dr. Radu Saveanu, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

"The prospects for a crackdown on corruption under the new Politburo Standing Committee are excellent. The prospects for a meaningful, i.e., substantive, crackdown are dismal," June Teufel Dreyer, a professor of political science and China specialist at the University of Miami, told GamblingCompliance on Thursday. "Since the Chinese system makes it difficult for businesses to succeed without party/government connections, and these involve pay-offs, a truly substantive crackdown on corruption runs the risk of paralysing, or at a minimum, severely adversely impacting, the economy," she added. "It won’t happen."
