Our head of programmes, Mikey Rosato's trip to Ntheu District in Malawi

Mikey Rosato, our maternity cover Head of Programmes, visited Malawi at the start of the year. He made some great progress with our partners the Perinatal Care Project (PCP) with whom we've been working since 2005 - but leaves with a very stark reminder of the work still to be done.

Storified by Women and Children First · Tue, Apr 22 2014 10:53:17

Good morning Malawi! http://t.co/clgccwYSth · mikey rosato
LogFrame wrestling with Eric and Edward at MaiKhanda in Malawi. Its currently winning! http://t.co/2XecW5JroI · mikey rosato
First stop, to see our partners MaiKhanda (means MotherBaby) to begin planning for three new projects in this part of Malawi. We successfully worked with MaiKhanda thanks to funding from The Health Foundation in the past. We ran 805 women's self-help groups that helped reduce the number of mums dying by up to 55 % and prevented 22% of babies dying.
Being Malawi I assume that 'boundless positivity' is on the menu today. Sounds tasty! http://t.co/ZtL3u4CrUp · mikey rosato
Another day..another LogFrame! Our partners, Perinatal Care Project in Malawi, have come up with some survival tips: http://t.co/CdSXjgCLaS · mikey rosato

Our PCP project funded by Comic Relief reaches approximately 100,000 women living 144 villages in remote areas of Ntcheu District.

1: visit the district hospital to see why the impacts, outcomes and outputs, however annoying, are so important. http://t.co/J2zSuelNqO · mikey rosato
The PCP project has meant that more women are getting the right number of antenatal check-up, giving birth in a health facility with access to the right equipment, like the baby warmer, should things go wrong, and they are receiving care after their babies are born from properly trained people. It’s more than a year since the last newborn baby died in Kanyemba village in Ntcheu district of Malawi.
2: while there, see the activities in action. A baby-warmer was donated through generous funding from Comic Relief. http://t.co/V3AQDHPeq0 · mikey rosato
The funding from Comic Relief has allowed the PCP project to donate some badly needed equipment to the District Hospital.  Like this new baby warmer into which the most vulnerable babies are placed. It replaces the terrible, dangerous electric heater that was previously used and often put the babies at further risk.
Interactive map from @NatGeo: The global geography of inequality http://t.co/pJPLrF8cZS http://t.co/ZkifQ1tCir · Calestous Juma

In a harrowingly stark reminder of why our work is so critical, on the day I visited the District Hospital on 8 February a young mother died of eclampsia – a condition that still kills hundreds of mothers in Malawi each year. In the UK it is 6 or 7 a year.

The condition isn’t any different. The difference is in the knowledge of mothers and access to health facilities and appropriately trained health professionals.

·      £5 will pay for one woman to attend one of our groups in Malawi

·      £30 will pay for six women to attend a self-help group for a year

@Amnesty International USA is now 1 million followers strong on Twitter. Together we’ve changed lives and freed prisoners.  A quick look at 8 inspiring moments that show how we got to this milestone and what it means for the human rights movement:
Wow. We just passed 1 MILLION followers. You are amazing - thanks for being 1 in a million!! http://t.co/e9XoyYuWZP http://t.co/jfrD37uPc0 · twitter.com

1) Our first tweet has a special place in our hearts

It seems like just yesterday, but in fact it's been nearly 6 years since @Amnesty first tweeted for justice. A simple message of support for Troy Davis, then on death row in Georgia:

2) #TooMuchDoubt #IAmTroy: Campaign for Troy Davis

The campaign for Troy Davis was not only our first foray into Twitter campaigning. It was a long and sustained campaign, and Twitter played a crucial role in raising awareness about Troy's case and about the fundamentally flawed system of executions the U.S. and around the world. While Troy was ultimately executed, the quality and quantity of support we saw on Twitter from everyday activists as well as celebrities and politicians was absolutely inspiring.
This tweet alone was retweeted over 3,000 times, showing the resonance --and extending the reach-- of the campaign for Troy Davis.

Juror: “If I knew then, what I know now, Troy Davis would not be on death row.” http://t.co/0xjWAenK #TooMuchDoubt

One year later, we are still Troy Davis. #IAmTroy http://t.co/m9AzKuH8 · twitter.com

3) #MDRepeal and @AIEndMDDp : Abolishing Death Penalty in Maryland

Death penalty abolition in Maryland was a campaign thirty years in the making. That said, the path to get Maryland over the finish as the 18th state to abolish the death penalty was paved in large part on Twitter

Tweetathon starts now at @GovernorOmalley to abolish #deathpenalty in MD! #mdrepeal

2013 is the year #MDrepeal #mdga13 #deathpenalty · kellyimitchell
After 30 years, in 2013, Amnesty International was there to see Maryland become the eighteenth state to abolish the death penalty! #MDrepealed

FYI, MD #deathpenalty repeal went into effect at midnight last night. Just thought you should know. #MDRepeal #MDrepealed

4) #SaveBeatriz: One woman's struggle to get access to life-saving care

A 22-year-old Salvadorean woman needed a therapeutic abortion to save her life. Her government refused to allow it. Amnesty International got involved in a global campaign to #SaveBeatriz, helping generate national and international pressure and media attention. After a few harrowing months, the government relented and Beatriz got life-saving care, thanks in large part to the Tweets and online actions of activists from @Amnesty and others around the world.

In conversations with experienced and beginner personnel, exactly the same issues show up again and again again. Listed here are five things you need to bear in mind whilst the examination is performed.

The results are in and the winner is- zeta tau alpha and Eaton. Its a tie for first place!!!! #canepride13 http://t.co/mF7ylkH80W · Kamrel J. Eppinger
1.Have reasonable expectations concerning the house.

Tension can be created by a restricted knowledge of ageing in older houses than might usually be feasible in customers, who may anticipate a larger level of excellence.

Every home has its distinctive character that value and you'll require to comprehend, despite the fact that you will find norms regarding ageing in houses which make very good common recommendations.

Everybody knows that there surely is a distinction between  a modern house along with 100-year old-house. Old homes perform differently, and were created to various requirements miami certificate of use. Old houses era differently centered on period of building.

then full of mortar and parged to create a more water-proof region. This really is a typical 100-year old cellar, which may not be viewed appropriate in 20-year old house, even though it still leaking. Or consider that the old septic bed or weeping tile system is more prone to troubles than the usual modern one.

2.Keep your feelings under control.

Like a customer, you have to keep in mind that your emotions about the making aren't highly relevant to the inspectoris real statement. The inspector is needed to record on each deficiency he discovers, however the inspector also needs to place things into context for you personally.

When significant cost items are recognized from the inspector you wish to avoid experience roller-coaster highs and lows. Maintaining your feelings under control enables you to digest extra information and also to avoid getting overrun by "all of the small things".

Obviously, a great inspector won't over-communicate views and his personal thoughts in regards to a home, and what must certanly be completed with the home. The inspector shouldn't lose sight to be able to assist his customer make the best evaluation of exactly what the homebuyer might be thinking or experience. This enables the inspector to describe things that need additional caution.

3.There isn't any such thing like a problem-free house.

A fresh framework may have several products looking for modification, and also the most immaculately maintained house will even possess some conditions that can use some progress. There's no house actually scrutinized that needed no printer about the examination record.

The inspector is trying to coach you on all the small items that have to be completed, and he also offers the entire objective of assisting you determine significant cost items. As he is able to in to the limited-time frame he needs to spend along with you he's actually only attempting to pack just as much info, although it might seem such as the inspector is choosing in your buy decision. Keep in mind that it's very important to keep things in context.

A great inspector won't waste psychological capability and everybody's time discussing display and each doorknob in the home. You ought to be informed  in writing, as well as verbally, there are "a number of" or "many" or "numerous" small fixes or changes needed on doorknobs or window displays, or whatever.

Personnel wish to provide their customers lots of helpful and related informative data on the home, but occasionally, even if there are not any key problems, it's probable that some personnel may overload by individually describing all of the small things. It might just be considered  a doorknob over there, along with a windows display below, but following a lengthy detailed evaluation of numerous particulars, you might get to the final outcome that "My-God! There are certainly a large amount of things wrong with this specific home!"

4.You need certainly to realize the most crucial products today.

For instance, within the inspector's attempts to make sure that a maintenance exercise is effectively accomplished by you in your new house, he might let you know how simple it's and perhaps describe just how to get it done. Bear in mind he is suggesting for information purposes, which you'll require extra assistance or coaching when really carrying it out on your own.

It's advisable to distinguish between that which once you relocate you what's crucial to understand today, and that which you may explain.

5.The examination process may be the same each time.

The inspector uses a systematic approach to reporting on products, just how and thus you will be led by him through the home and analyzing you issues in a specific purchase. This uniformity of approach may be the technique he employs to cover-all of the numerous items which they should analyze.

For instance, also you inquire about the electric system and if he's discussing basement wetness, once the time comes they must refocus your focus on the subject available, after which examine the electric.

Then you definitely may toss them down, in the event that you regularly ask questions about items that the inspector hasn't yet got an opportunity to examine and he might neglect to describe anything of notice.

This isn't designed to deter anyone from asking relevant questions to simply help explain issues in your thoughts. If you should be thinking "Exactly What The heck is he speaing frankly about today?" then you definitely need certainly to request the inspector to describe. You've an ideal chance to discuss his moment today, as you may phone your inspector anytime.

6.Pay interest.

The examination is definitely help you save profit the short and long haul and an important period, made to let you know. If you should be distracted by something (kids, family, friends, etc), you might not acquire some information. Don't think about the examination a great chance to display the house to significant persons that you experienced.

This seems obvious, but each inspector has withstood a period once they have provided their customers a large reason about why anything must certanly be completed, or not completed, simply to discover afterwards they totally skipped (or misunderstood) a vital stage. If your homebuyer is not hearing, the concept just doesn't cope with.

If you will find way too many people expressing way too many issues all at one time, do not be afraid to nicely request some room to talk to your inspector. The inspector could also redirect your focus on the company available.

7.The inspector is just a generalist, not really a professional.

Nevertheless, most personnel possess a niche. Then you definitely can get extra information on electric problems than if he's an engineer, if he's an authorized electrician.

The inspector understands just how to identify issues, if he's not totally familiar within the issue available however the wise inspector doesn't provide options. They must show you to consult with a professional when the issue requires a far more comprehensive evaluation.

8.The examination may be the only thing the inspector is aware of.

Take into account the big-picture, bearing in mind that purchasing a home is just a large task, and also the inspector is just paid to become involved with one-part of it.

All of the problems concerning a house purchase have nothing related to the examination. Youare probably only a little off-course speaing frankly about it, until he's being paid to send a septic tank or check a well. In the event that you request where in actuality the border lines are or exactly what the house price is, you ought to be informed from the inspector he does not understand. These conversations will not achieve something right now, also itis anything you'd be better-off discussing together with your broker or attorney.

9.Have enjoyable.

It is not every single day that you will get to purchase a house. Benefit from the procedure as best while you could. Lighten. There's lots of worry and work involved with property purchasing and inspection reports, and including tension will require from your usefulness in building choices and knowing the examination.

10.Follow up.

There's also likely to be places which are disclaimed because of limited entry. If something was hidden from view so you will find out concentrate on these the moment you are able to.

It's incumbent upon one to achieve this, in case your inspector directs one to follow-up on difficulties with another professional, be it for termites, wood stoves, insurance or other problems. This isn't an incident of the inspector passing the money, but an incident of creating you conscious of conditions that need additional analysis.

There might be damaging effects, if you should be advised to complete some upkeep and neglect to achieve this. For example, failing woefully to caulk the tub or re-grout the tiles you could end up an easy case of decay, or plaster might drop with harm to furniture or injuries. Since he needs you will do your research regarding maintenance or upkeep, you may not be warned by the inspector of probable effects.

What I've Learned

I was drawn to the field of librarianship for a variety of reasons, the main one being my desire to help and connect others. The leap then, from librarianship to social networking, is an easy one to make as social media is largely about connections. Finding new connections, revamping or maintaining old ones and exploring the connections that could be.

With that being said, connection is pretty useless if not used effectively. All it takes is one social media PR disaster or one mismanaged online community to sever some connections forever. Through IST 686 I've learned about myriad social media concepts and strategies for effective connection/communication that I'd previously only had a surface level understanding of. For example, this is my first ever Storify post! I'd never even heard of Storify before the beginning of this semester. Some  other examples of my gained knowledge include:

1. How to become and/or identify a trust agent and why cultivating trust in an online community is a valuable thing. A quote that gives a solid overview of what a trust agent does exactly can be found on page 93 of Trust Agents: Using the Web to Build Influence, Improve Reputation and Earn Trust:

"Trust agents aren’t direct evangelists, meaning that they don’t incessantly promote their own company or product. They plant seeds that bloom into evangelism on their own, through online and face-to-face interactions with individuals, through blog posts that continue to influence, or through going the extra mile for customers, or even noncustomers, because word of mouth is still more natural and powerful than any Frankenstein viral marketing people hack together."

For a recent example of the types of online communication trust agents facilitate, take my interaction with Time Warner Cable on Twitter. I tweeted the following after losing yet another battle with my spotty Internet service:
Within the hour, TWC responded:
I did DM them, and they fixed my Internet issues shortly thereafter. It should be noted that I don’t think TWC is a trust agent per se but I do think they are exemplifying trust agent traits here, namely responding professionally to my snarky complaints in a timely manner, and going above and beyond for me, the customer.
2. The importance of not only thinking about what your posting to social networking platforms before you actually publish said post but also (perhaps more importantly) how to properly apologize if you've participated in or spearheaded a social media fail.
In IST 686 we learned that an important rule to follow to avoid epic fails on the internet is to be careful what you ask for, especially when it comes to social media campaigns. 3. In the same vein as lesson # 2, I've gained valuable knowledge of the need for a regularly updated social media policy and how to go about creating a social media policy of my own. I've shared the link to "5 Noteworthy Examples of Corporate Social Media Policies" (a succinct yet helpful article) with you below.

4. The skillset (or sheer dumb luck) necessary to create shareable content that is trending or goes viral. The award for my favorite example of trending on purpose goes to Jimmy Kimmel for his "Worst Twerk Fail EVER" video that took the Internet by storm. Other than making me laugh hysterically for 15 minutes, this video proves that it's sometimes possible to strategically go viral...whether you need your own talk show in order to make this happen remains to  be seen.

What Surprised Me

To realize how intertwined social justice and social media are in this day and age. I knew to some extent, but the global scale and scope of the online social justice movements/communities certainly surprised me. One example of this intersection is Black Twitter, an online movement/community of predominantly African-American Twitter users who focus on highlighting issues pertinent to the black community. Did you hear about the Dangerous Black Kids hashtag? That was Black Twitter.

Some #DangerousBlackKids grow up to help Americans get health insurance & inspire a whole generation. http:/http://t.co/e7eA8qXZfF · Save Auburn
