This was a big week! To start things off, two of the hottest startups in Austin merged to create an even brighter fire - Spredfast and Mass Relevance are now one company. Austin Ventures was the lead investor in both companies. The deal makes sense because each company has different solutions for managing social marketing and they don't have a lot of overlapping customers - so hopefully they will be able to cross-sell each others products. Together, they make a bigger company that is more attractive to acquirers and that much closer to being able to go public.
This week we welcomed Kerry O'Connor, Austin's new Chief Innovation Officer at a reception for the startup community hosted by Google and Capital Factory. There were a lot of questions about her role and ambitions, which were (understandably and wisely) met with more questions. I like Kerry a lot at first impression. She's witty and poised, but still genuine. She clearly has some opinions but she's starting taking inventory of what's here and meeting the various constituents in the community. I particularly liked her framework for figuring out what we have that's strong, what needs to be improved, what could be added, and what would take it to the next level. One thing builds upon the other.

This week was the DreamIt Ventures Austin Demo Day. 9 startups presented their progress since coming to Austin 3 months ago and it was impressive! My personal favorite is SecondMic, which lets you listen to alternate audio commentary for sports and other live events. I also liked Swan, which is like Uber for manicures and pedicures and other beauty services that are performed at your home or work.
