How Men and Women are Armed for the (Verbal) Battle: A Male Perspective

$

The business world is often portrayed as a fight; fight for a job, fight for a promotion, fight for ideas. How does this world view change when seen through the eyes of a female counterpart?

Storified by ENG122113MATP · Tue, Feb 04 2014 17:53:51

The difference in how men and women view verbal engagements have a distinct difference starting in childhood. These interactions continue throughout school and into business. Often, this can lead to women being marginalized and not taken seriously.

In the excerpt of Deborah Tannen’s book “How Male and Female Students Use Language Differently” from Chapter 12 of “From Inquiry to Academic Writing”, Tannen describes the differences in how boys and girls interact with peers. She says that “Typically, a girl has a best friend with whom she sits and talks, frequently telling secrets. It’s the telling of secrets, the fact and the way that they talk to each other; that makes them best friends.” (Greene Lidinsky 345) The key point is girls tend to have smaller groups of friends, or one best friend, that they become intimate with. They tell each other secrets in their own shared language. In contrast, Tannen also notices a distinct difference in how boys interact in childhood. She states: “High-status boys give orders and push lower-status boys around. So boys are expected to use language to seize center stage: by exhibiting their skill, displaying their knowledge, and challenging and resisting challenges.” (Greene Lidinsky 345-346) Because boys must learn to “exhibit their skills” to resist being the “lower-status boy”, they must also learn how to craft their language differently. This is seen when men use insults and arguments as a way to bond a friendship together.

In the link above, Tannen addresses the ways these communication skills impact how each gender is perceived in business. Tannen talks about how males will not willing put themselves in a position in which the other participant in the conversation is seen as superior. This can mean that men are not as willing to apologize or willing to seek out feedback. The opposite was seen when Tannen looked at females in the work place. As part of their normal conversational, women try to make sure they are seen as equals. Often they will not actively try to reach the position of power. This leaves them open to be seen as not being assertive and scared.

The tweet above lists a quote from “Speed of Trust” by Stephen M.R. Covey. This notion explains that we “judge others by their behaviors”, including the way we expect them to communicate. The act of understanding that women and men communicate in often vastly different ways is the first step in establishing trust. The insights that can often be missed, or incorrectly attributed to men, can be fully realized in a way that will move a business to be more innovative and current.

Generally, men will continue to see business as something to be won but women do not have to compromise, or change their communication habits, in order to fit into the group to bring about real change. Once each side realizes that there is no right or wrong way to communicate, the business world can move toward equality of not only position but of appreciation of ideas.

The shift is coming. More online content will be accessed by mobile devices than tethered devices. For communicators, this means more than developing apps and reconfiguring existing web content to fit on a smaller screen. Here's how mobility is changing content consumption behaviors.

Il noto blogger Bloggings by Boz riassume così i risultati:

That concludes tonight's Mayoral Candidates Forum. You can find a complete video courtesy of Channel 22 tomorrow at TaosNews.com
6:48 p.m.: "I can't emphasize enough the importance of a unified community," Barrone says. Taos demonstrated unity in building a new county complex, he notes. "We did it on time, on budget and nobody went to jail over it."
6:46 p.m.: "I have a responsibility to create a legacy for my children and children's children," Peralta says, telling the audience his drive to serve again as mayor is rooted in a commitment to the community. He mentions the establishment of UNM-Taos and CAV under his leadership in appealing for the votes of tonight's attendees.
6:44 p.m.: Mayor says there is a lot at stake in this election. He says his record demonstrates he deserves another term and points specifically to his work with the state as well as a rise in GRT's.
6:42 p.m.: Peralta says he drafted and proposed JPA months ago but that it was not approved by the county commission. He returned with a similar proposal yesterday, suggesting there are still possibilities to work together.
6:41 p.m.: Mayor says the airport and E911 projects will move forward but that it is also possible for the town and county to work together on those issues.
6:40 p.m.: Barrone begins another round of one-minute rebuttals. He says if the acequias have standing, they have standing.
6:39 p.m.: Asked if the candidates would like another round of rebuttals, Peralta says he would like to make one more point.
6:38 p.m.: Córdova says the big picture in annexation fight is the town's ability to manage its own airport. He says county does not have a corridor zoned for commercial traffic.
6:38 p.m.: Mayor has a copy of the Joint Powers Agreement and says it contradicts Barrone's points.
6:37 p.m.: The money that has been spent on legal fees in annexation fight could have been spent on the project's local match, Barrone argues.
6:36 p.m.: "It's our responsibility to get things done," Peralta says, appealing for greater cooperation and further negotiations.
6:34 p.m.: "We need to take a stand, we need to work together to move these issues forward," Barrone says, alluding Joint Powers Agreement.
6:33 p.m.: Acequias necessitated legal action, he adds.
6:33 p.m.: "I'm the guy that continued to say we need to work together," Barrone says. "There comes a point in time when you can't come to the table any longer."
6:32 p.m.: "It's not personalities, it's not politics," he says.
6:31 p.m.: "We haven't sat at the negotiating table long enough," Peralta says. Leaders should continue their negotiations, he adds. "We do agree these issues are important to the community and we need to work together to solve them."
6:30 p.m.: Issues will be resolved in a few months if he continues to serve as mayor and Barrone continues to serve on commission, the mayor adds.
6:29 p.m.: "I don't need working gloves and I've gotten my hands pretty dirty," Córdova adds. Division is rooted in politics.
6:29 p.m.: "These are complex issues," Mayor Córdova says. He alludes to successful collaborations with Taos Pueblo and UNM-Taos.
6:28 p.m.: Changing things up now. Candidates will have two minutes to explain what they would do to resolve disputes between the town and county. Each will have one minute to rebut.

6:27 p.m.: Town must effectively market itself while retaining unique culture and character, Peralta adds.
6:26 p.m.: "What is it that we have to sell here that is going to diversify our economy. Nobody is come in here and invest money if they don't know we exist," Peralta says when asked about economy.
6:24 p.m.: Mayor also points to upgrades in police and dispatch facilities.
6:24 p.m.: "I'm not interested in speeding tickets. I'm interested in solving crime," Córdova says.
6:23 p.m.: Asked about public safety, Mayor Córdova touts payment plan unique to the police department. "We have one of the best benefits programs," he says.
6:21 p.m.: Asked about capital improvements, Barrone says he would first go to his budget and see what is available. "What we need to do is work with staff first of all," he says. "It's working together with your staff to make sure all is in order before you move forward."
6:19 p.m.: Barrone is asked about his recent decision to move inside town limits to run for mayor. Will he stay if he loses? "My commitment to the community is I bought another house inside the town to have a place to live," he replies. "I am here. I own several houses in the town of Taos. Have owned them for over 27 years."
6:18 p.m.: Would Peralta leave town government again if offered a better gig elsewhere? "I'm not interested in anything else," he replies. "I'm not asking for anything other than to help you."
6:16 p.m.: When asked about his radio stations receiving town ad dollars, mayor points out he does not participate in those decisions. The Taos News receives even more ad dollars, he notes.
6:13 p.m.: "There is a difference between setting policy and carrying it out," Peralta replies when asked whether his administration would differ from Córdova's. He supported the mayor in all the controversial votes of 2013.
6:10 p.m.: "It was done to get press and we got press off it," Barrone says — maybe joking, maybe not — when asked why he voted in favor of naming county complex buildings after sitting commissioners.
6:08 p.m.: Mayor Córdova insists it was the right decision to move into a new dispatch center. Studies prove that, he says. "Out citizens are better today because of it."
6:04 p.m.: There's a stalemate in local politics, Peralta says.
6:03 p.m.: Peralta says he will listen to the community. Has Mayor Córdova not done so? "Yes and no," Peralta replies. He touts positive relationship with county leaders and municipal officials across the Enchanted Circle.
6:02 p.m.: The hospital did not demonstrate it needed the tax at the time, Barrone replies. Stakeholders are now exploring new options and state-level solutions are being pursued to ensure tax revenue previously dedicated to hospital will stay at the hospital.
6:01 p.m.: Barrone is asked about his vote against a referendum to impose tax for Holy Cross Hospital.
5:59 p.m.: Will Peralta pursue annexation as he previously did as mayor? "Probably not," he says. The community is not ready for it.
5:57 p.m.: Mayor Córdova asked about $75,000 arts and cultural district grant the state reclaimed the town earlier this year. Grant violated procurement act, the mayor says. "That grant will be available and many more monies will be available moving forward," Córdova insists, noting that legal issues must be resolved first.
5:55 p.m.: "One reason you would get new ideas is because they don't come from me," Peralta replies when asked if he would really bring new policies to the job when he has already served as mayor. "It's you people who have the ideas."
5:54 p.m.: Asked about previous town manager's dismissal and severance package, Mayor Córdova says he opposed size of severance package but can't discuss details due to personnel policies.
5:53 p.m.: "It's important for people in this community to know what's in this land use," Barrone says when asked why new land use code has yet to be approved.
5:49 p.m.: Barrone is asked why he opposed Old Martina's Hall liquor license when he claims to be pro-business. The answer is simple, he replied: The restaurant was within 300 feet of a church.
5:47 p.m.: Peralta is asked why he was not able to complete airport expansion when he previously served as mayor. "It's one of those things that just takes the time that is required to do the requirements the court requires," he says. The process was lengthy and he commends Mayor Córdova for finishing the deal.
5:46 p.m.: Barrone mentions E911 and the airport as issues that will require collaboration.
5:45 p.m.: "It's not my way or the highway," Dan Barrone says when asked about his slogan "together we can make a difference."
5:44 p.m.: Asked about his slogan, "Expect a lot," Fred Peralta says it underscores a new for investment in the community and responsive government.

Indian captain MS Dhoni has won yet another toss and decided to bowl first on the opening morning of the first test against New Zealand at Eden Park. Dhoni won all 5 tosses during the ODI series, however it didn't hinder NZ winning the series 4 nil.

Peter Fulton and Hamish Rutherford are opening the innings for the Black Caps, with Fulton put down at third slip in the second over off Zaheer Khan. It was second slips catch, but third dived across in front of him and spilt it. Fulton was on 1 at the time.

The first Indian break through has come in the 10th over, with Rutherford being tempted by a short rising delivery outside the line of off stump. The thick outside edge flying to Rahane in the gully, who's pulled off a spectacular catch. Diving full length to his right, he's snaffled it in both hands. Rutherford caught Rahane, bowled by Ishant Sharma for 6, in Sharma's first over. New Zealand 19 for 1.

Three overs later Fulton has been trapped on the crease, playing defensively at Zaheer Khan. Fulton has been beaten off the track by a ball that's moved slightly and has taken his back pad on the knee roll. Umpire Richard Kettleborough giving him out LBW. Fulton's out for 13. New Zealand is 23 for 2.

New Zealand's most prolific batsman of the last 12 months, Ross Taylor has lasted only 15 balls, before being caught at mid off. Taylor has been enticed into the drive to a full length delivery, which came off the middle of the bat, but he couldn't keep it down, with Jadeja taking a stunning catch, diving away to his right to haul it in. Taylor, caught Jadeja, bowled Ishant Sharma for 3. New Zealand 30 for 3.

New Zealand will go to lunch at 54 for 3, with Williamson on 22 and McCullum 5. The first session belonging to the tourists, having put New Zealand in. Shami has none for 10 from 8 overs, however his direction was lacking not making the batsmen play enough. Zaheer Khan has 1 for 28 from 9, while the pick of the Indian bowlers, Ishant Sharma has 2 for 8 from 6. Sharma has been gleaning extra bounce, while committing the batsmen to play.

Dhoni has bowled Virat Kohli for one over after lunch, which was hard to follow, the slow medium bowler not helping to keep the pressure on the New Zealand batsmen, who have been in an assertive mood after lunch.

In the 4th over after lunch Williamson has had a life, being dropped at first slip by Murali Vijay from the bowling of Shami.
A genuine edge and not a difficult catch. Williamson was on 32 at the time.

In the first 10 overs after lunch Williamson and McCullum have added 56 runs at 5.6 an over, India losing their first session grip on the game.

Williamson's 50 has come from 79 balls, in 128 minutes, including 3 fours and 2 sixes.
