Et si nous nous penchions sur les débuts de l’univers ? Quelques semaines après la publication des derniers résultats de Planck, nous nous penchions sur ses cartes du fond diffus cosmologique. Un sujet pas si facile… Voici ce que nous en avons retenu, en quelques tweets :)

Depuis deux ans, le satellite européen Planck s’est éteint. Mais les scientifiques commencent juste à décortiquer sa mesure du fond diffus cosmologique (CMB), ce bruit sourd issu du big bang. Nous en parlions le 17 février 2015 au Café du Pont-Neuf, à Paris, pour ce nouveau Mardi de l'espace.

Discutaient avec nous ce soir-là Olivier La Marle, responsable des programmes d’astrophysique au CNES, et François Bouchet, directeur de recherche au CNRS (IAP).

Recently the E. O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation and Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment cosponsored a symposium on biodiversity, and I had the good fortune to attend. I want to mention right off the bat that the symposium was free and open to the public, something I found to be philosophically crucial. The events were well attended, and although professors and their graduate students were among the audience, many attendees were nonacademics with an abiding interest in ecological issues. I spoke with a computer scientist, for example, who'd once been a forester. Another attendee had spent her career as a railway company administrator and became interested in environmental sciences when working on issues of right-of-way. Much was said during the conference about the importance of community involvement in specific ecological projects like habitat rehabilitation and species surveys. Getting the community involved in broader ecological discussions is equally important, though, so opening the biodiversity symposium to the public seemed especially apropos.

The symposium was stacked with solid presentations and compelling stories, told by a reliable cast. As you'll see, in cases where I wasn't able to attend a particular presentation, I've provided some information about the presenter's work more generally--some of it from previous coverage in American Scientist--to provide a sense of how they fit into the Biodiversity Days conversation as a whole. You'll also find links to videos of the events so you can soak up as much of the symposium as you'd like.

Christopher Norment, chair of the Department of Environmental Science and Biology at the State University of New York College at Brockport, lectured on his work studying a handful of endangered species in the Death Valley region. He punctuated the presentation with readings from Relicts of a Beautiful Sea, which focuses on these imperiled desert species (a toad, a salamander, and four taxa of pupfish), and from an earlier book, Return to Warden's Grove: Science, Desire, and the Lives of Sparrows.

The Signature of Time and Place: Celebrating the Southeast's Remarkable Biodiversity

Peter White

As a professor of conservation biology and ecology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill--and director for 28 years of the North Carolina Botanical Garden--Peter White is well known and highly regarded within North Carolina and far beyond. He has a deep understanding of the history of biodiversity in the southeast. He regularly gives public lectures on William Bartram and the Quaker botanists who established the tradition in which Bartram worked and whose influence stretched from the early 1600s and through the late 18th century. (I attended one of these lectures some years ago, and it was transfixing.) At the same time, White is looking to the future of conservation biology and was a founding leader of the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI) in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. (Todd Witcher's presentation below includes much more about the ATBI.)
